So What’s the Deal With Paul Richardson, Really?

In case you’ve been living under a rock, the Redskins have a new wide receiver, Paul Richardson, Jr., formerly of the Seattle Seahawks. Since the Redskins had a slow free agency week, I thought it would be a good time to take a detailed look at what the Redskins bought with their $40M and the kind of effect he may have on the Washington passing game under the guidance of new quarterback Alex Smith. I’ve written several previous iterations of this “So What’s the Deal With . . .” series, including (of those who remain Redskins) Samaje Perine (read here), Jordan Reed (read here), and Rob Kelley (click here). The intent of this series is to give you a detailed look at what the subject, in this case Richardson, has produced in his past and where he ranks amongst his peers, in order to give insight as to what we can expect from him in the future. Let’s proceed on and see what we can learn about Mr. Richardson.
Background and college
Richardson is a Los Angeles, California, native, where he was a 4-star football recruit and a track star coming out of high school who ran a career-best 10.62 seconds in the 100 meter dash. He originally committed to attend UCLA but was dismissed from the team due to an arrest for felony theft of a purse during summer school prior to the start of his freshman fall semester. He then transferred to the University of Colorado and attended the school for 4 years, posting a total of 156 receptions, 2,412 yards, 15.5 yards per reception, and 21 touchdowns[1]. Richardson missed the entire 2012 season due to a torn ACL in his left knee suffered during spring ball. This is his season by season statistical breakdown:
2010: 12 gms, 34 receptions, 514 yards, 15.1 yards per reception, 6 TDs
2011: 9 gms, 39 receptions, 555 yards, 14.2 yards per reception, 5 TDs
2012: did not play
2013: 12 gms, 83 receptions, 1,343 yards, 16.2 yards per reception, 10 TDs
What jumps out of the page about his collegiate career is that Richardson’s production more than doubled in 2013. He clearly became a much more integral part of the offense during that season, and was able to parlay that success into selection by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2nd round of the 2014 NFL draft. At the 2014 NFL combine, Richardson ran the 40 yard dash in 4.40 seconds and posted a 38 inch vertical leap. Colorado reportedly timed him at 4.28 seconds in the 40[2]. He is 6’0” and is listed at 183 pounds.
NFL production
Over the course of his 4 year career with the Seahawks, Richardson has played 47 games, starting 19, with 95 receptions on 161 targets, 1,302 yards, 13.7 yards per reception, and 8 touchdowns[3]. He re-tore his left ACL in Seattle’s divisional playoff game against the Carolina Panthers in his rookie year, which caused him to miss the first half of the 2015 season; however, he suffered a hamstring injury in his first game back and missed the rest of the season. His year-by-year statistics:
2014: 15 gms, 6 starts, 44 tgts, 29 rec, 271 yds, 9.3 yds/rec, 1 TD, long 32 yds
2015: 1 gm, 0 starts, 1 tgt, 1 rec, 40 yds, 40.0 yds/rec, 0 TDs, long 40 yds
2016: 15 gms, 0 starts, 36 tgts, 21 rec, 288 yds, 13.7 yds/rec, 1 TD, long 39 yds
2017: 16 gms, 13 starts, 80 tgts, 44 rec, 703 yds, 16.0 yds/rec, 6 TDs, long 61 yds
There’s no getting around the fact that Richardson’s numbers are pedestrian at best. I don’t need to include a big chart in this column to demonstrate that his raw statistics – both career and 2017 – don’t rate at the top of the league, despite being with a fairly high scoring offense like Seattle. To put his 2017 into context, his 44 receptions ranked 55th in the NFL amongst wide receivers and 72nd when also including tight ends. His 703 yards in 2017 was tied for 38th amongst wide receivers and tied for 43rd when tight ends are included. Richardson’s 2017 catch percentage was 55%[4], which was 54th amongst wide receivers with 25 or more receptions on the season, and 82nd when tight ends are included.
When compared to his peers from the 2014 draft class, Richardson’s production has been pedestrian. There were 36 players drafted in 2014 who’ve played receiver, and of those, Miami Dolphin Jarvis Landry has been by far the most prolific over the past 4 seasons, with 400 receptions, followed by Odell Beckham, Jr., who has had 313 receptions over that time span. Richardson’s 95 receptions is 14th of those 36 receivers. Richardson’s 1,302 yards is also ranked 14th, with Mike Evans from Tampa Bay leading the way with 4,579 yards, and Beckham and Landry, respectively, in 2nd and 3rd place. His 55% catch percentage is 15th of those 36 players, although 3 of those ahead of him had less then 10 career receptions and another had only 14.
To drill down a bit further, 7 receivers were selected in round 2 in 2014: Marquise Lee (pick 39), Jordan Matthews (pick 42), Richardson (pick 45), Davante Adams (pick 53), Cody Latimer (pick 56), Allen Robinson (pick 61), and Landry (pick 63). Of those 7, Richardson’s 95 receptions and his 1,302 career receiving yards are both ranked 6th. His career 59% catch percentage is 4th among that group.
At first glance, this does not appear to be the type of production that is worth of a $40M contract. I didn’t include him in my 2018 wide receiver free agency preview (click here to read) for that very reason. On the surface, this isn’t a signing that is safely based on past established performance. The Redskins scouting staff know all of this, yet signed him anyway. Why is that? This is a signing born of potential, and the answers are only found on film.
What does the film show?
Richardson was a consistent starter this past year for the first time in his career and was on the field for the bulk of the Seahawks’ offensive snaps. What everyone first needs to understand is that he is not a Jamison Crowder clone just because he’s fast, either in body type or play style (we’ve had a few comments to that effect). The Seahawks played him principally as an outside receiver, mostly in the X (outside receiver on the line of scrimmage) position, sometimes as the Z (off the line of scrimmage but outside of the slot receiver), not in the slot, although he did rarely play in the slot. The Seahawks also used bunch formations. To put it into Redskin terms, Richardson is more of a Pierre Garcon-type in terms of his abilities, although he isn’t as bulky or physical as Garcon, and he has speed that is at least in the range of Desean Jackson, if not quite that fast. This is not a player who is going to take reps from Crowder. The plan for the Redskins is for Josh Doctson to play the “X” role, with Richardson starting as the “Z” receiver, and Crowder remaining in the slot. However, Jay Gruden has repeatedly stated that he likes versatile players, and his offensive scheme is creative enough that all of these players will have to move around – after all, Jordan Reed (when healthy) has been known to line up in a variety of positions, for instance, as has running back Chris Thompson. Richardson has proven to be versatile enough to fit the mold of what Gruden likes. So, while Richardson will be the principal “Z”, he will almost certainly be used in a variety of roles. The Redskins frequently use bunch formations, which, as stated, were also a part of the Seahawks scheme.
Richardson can effectively run the entire route tree. He is not a player who is limited to just deep outside routes – fly, out and ups, flag routes, post-corner – that Jackson excelled in. Seattle frequently had Richardson run shallow to mid-depth drag and crossing routes straight across the middle. He was able to use his speed effectively to create separation between the trailing corners in these situations; in fact, at least two of his 2017 touchdowns came from these type of plays. He also demonstrated effectiveness on square out-type timing patterns to the sideline (which we also saw from Jackson). At the same time, Richardson clearly has speed by NFL receiver standards, and as a result is a good option to help “take the top off the defense”, as the cliché goes. He isn’t overly physical like Garcon when fighting for a contested ball, but he is effective at using his superior athleticism and leaping ability to beat the defender for the catch. He can be a complete receiver, and most definitely will not be limited to just a deep threat role. Richardson is better than that.
However, some words of caution: Richardson’s film does not show that he has Desean Jackson’s incredible burst and acceleration. That’s not really a knock on Richardson given that Jackson is one of the quickest receivers in the league and one of the best deep threats in NFL history. Whereas Jackson had an uncanny ability to seemingly loaf on deep vertical routes, and then accelerate, Formula One racecar-style, at the exact right moment, the film doesn’t show that Richardson’s speed and burst is on that level. Also, his route running and ability to set up receivers can use improvement. He doesn’t have the best timing or technique with his moves and can’t always get defenders to bite. He also has a tendency to get a bit lazy during plays for which he isn’t the primary option, and he isn’t a plus blocker even by receiver standards unless the play specifically calls for him to block, such as on a designed Russell Wilson scramble to his side of the field. The Redskins have a quality receivers coach in Ike Hillard, though, and I expect him to be a benefit to Richardson.
His other downside is that he is susceptible to drops. He has about one ugly drop or so per game where the ball will hit him dead in the hands but he can’t come down with the reception. Richardson’s low completion percentage is in part on Richardson.
Given all of the positives that Richardson demonstrates, why didn’t he post better numbers with Seattle? First and foremost, the 2014 – 2017 Seahawks had many quality offensive weapons such as Tyler Lockett, Doug Baldwin, and Jimmy Graham, and Richardson therefore didn’t get the sheer number of targets that he would on other teams despite being a starter. His career high-water mark of number of targets in a single game came in 2017 against the Falcons, during which he was targeted 8 times. That isn’t very many for a top-flight NFL receiver. In fact, he only averaged 5 targets per game in 2017 and 3.4 targets per game over the course of his career.
Furthermore, as good a quarterback and leader as Russell Wilson is, I do not believe his play style was such that it maximized Richardson’s effectiveness. Wilson, who was under a ton of pressure this past season thanks to substandard offensive line play, frequently used his ability to run and scramble to extend plays; however, he rarely moved up in the pocket (the old “climbing the ladder” cliché), instead spinning and rolling out. While that does extend plays and allowed him to scramble for significant yardage, specifically 586 rushing yards in 2017, the downside to that is that Wilson frequently misses reads, holds the ball so long that throwing windows have already closed, and cuts off half of the field as a result of his movement outside the pocket. The film shows that consistently seeing and hitting tight windows just isn’t a strength of Wilson’s game, although he can do it when he stays in the pocket. A true pocket passer, skilled in timing and rhythm, would be better able to utilize a receiver like Richardson, who relies on speed and quickness to create separation that can come and go quickly. It appears, based on his $40M contract, that the Redskins feel similarly and believe that Alex Smith, who played in Andy Reid’s west coast-based timing system for the past 4 seasons, will allow Richardson to be more effective than he was with the Seahawks.
Richardson himself alluded to this in his introductory presser when he stated, “what stands out about Alex is he doesn’t have to leave the pocket. He can deliver balls on time in the pocket and then when he does scramble, he’s dangerous. He can go get the yards himself or he’s going to find whoever’s available that’s working with him to make the plays. So, they are very different quarterbacks, but I really appreciate Alex’s skillset. So, I think that it will help me grow as a receiver (emphasis added).” Take particular note of the “deliver balls on time in the pocket” phrase – Richardson knows the negative effect of Wilson’s athleticism on his game. He further stated in that press conference, “[t]here wasn’t a lot of balls, there just wasn’t. There’s guys that have more targets in one season than I have had my whole career . . . .” With the benefit of a week of hindsight, Richardson’s comments were remarkably honest and show that he’s looking forward to being more productive in Jay’s scheme and with a west coast expert like Smith at the helm who can best utilize his skillset.
Conclusion
What I see in Paul Richardson is a player whose ability outshines his production thusfar, and a player who should be able to accomplish more in Washington than he ever did in Seattle. Don’t expect him to be a Desean Jackson clone, even though he will be expected to fill that role, because he is simultaneously both less and more than that. As long as he can continue to work on his technique and try to limit his drops, he should become a valued and key member of the Redskins receiving corps.

Bruce is average at best. He doesn’t appear to have a savvy ability to trade or sign FAs that you feel the skins ended up improving the overall team. That being said, once we FT Kirk in 2016 how would the skins ever been able to trade him under the tag? Unlike Alex smith in KC, we didn’t have 1 yr remaining on his contract and full rights to easily make a deal/trade. Once that first FT was signed if felt like it had to be a LT deal or eventual release.

If the NFL actually enforces the no dropping your head rule it’s going to be flag football, meaning they’ll be about 15 PF penalties a game. That would be unwatchable. It will probably be another scenario where the rule is loosely enforced and nobody really knows what a penalty is

A lot of people like what the Rams are doing. Not sitting back congratulating each other on 11-5 season…they are going out…taking advantage of the rookie wages their QB is making and signing guys who are good…making their run now as opposed to later. I mean…a Superbowl win is a Superbowl win. Kinda like Seattle did. They got a lot of playoff appearances…2 Superbowls posts and one SB win.

That is one of the best strategies now for winning a SB. Get a rookie QB on the cheap, allowing you to spend more on the rest of the team. Once the QB gets his first big contract, hard to be able to put nearly as many playmakers in the positions.
Eagles tried to do it last year and got lucky because although they lost that QB on his rookie deal, Foles, the backup, played lights out down the stretch.
High paid QB’s can make it very difficult to build a supporting cast (unless you’re NE with Brady and Bellicheck).

Fwiw, if you listen to the JP Finlay interview with Bruce, it’s hard to disagree, or find fault, with anything he says, regardless of the past.
This is in no way an endorsement of flounder being right in his steadfast, if not blind, support of the Redskins front office, but let’s keep it honest.

Couldn’t trade him during the season like Garrapolo because Cousins was on the tag. Cousins would have had to agree to a deal with another team for a kind of sign and trade, and that would have had the most value before Free Agency and certainly before the draft. On the tag, maybe San Fran gives you what they gave for Jimmy.

I definately soured on Cravens last year like everyone else…and I see lotta folk think Cravens isnt worth a 2nd pick in trade value etc. ..I disagree. I think if you cant get a 2nd or high 3rd in trade I think there is a good chance he plays like a 2nd rounder in ’18. Especially w the new convoluted helmet rule passed yesterday. If cant move him now…keep him and let him compete before jumping the gun…

First thought though, is that I’m running to that side if I am the other team, but that’s why maybe Ioannidis plays the DE on that side and then you have Allen and Kerrigan coming from offenses right side.
Of course the real problem with this, is when Cravens gets to rush the QB and goes full metal jacket on the QB’s corpse. That’s prob going to be a fine and 15 yards in this new NFL.

Rich Tandler w an interesting take on roster churn yesterday ( I call it turnstiles )…. like 16? diff starters/players from ’16 to ’17…and ’17 to ’18 could be 13 or so diff starters.. so I guess that makes like what ..15 to 25 diff starters and rotators in 2 years? Hard to build stability and a consistent or even a 1 year winner like that. Unless you go all out like a Philly I suppose…
He’ll prob rotate with Smith and get 35-40% of the snaps. Just like Galette

I’m def in the minority but I sort of liked the previous catch rule. Controlling the ball to the ground seemed logical. Now a guy can catch it, stumble (make a football move) and get blasted by a safety to the ground. Ball pops out and it’s a catch vs incompletion. IDK.

I found the rule to be ridiculous when it came to goal-line calls. If a guy has control of a ball and crosses the goal-line it should be a TD immediately. If a RB reaches the ball across the goal-line it’s an immediate TD, doesn’t matter what happens at that point (like the ball getting slapped out of his hand before he is “down”). But if a guy making a catch around the goal-line extends the ball and otherwise appears to have control once the ball touches the goal-line, it is NOT a TD if he goes down to the ground and the ball then shuffles around and comes out. It made no sense that “going to the ground” somehow warranted a higher threshold for qualifying as a catch.

Sports journalists are questioning whether Jon Gruden can adapt to the new NFL after being away from coaching since 2008. According to them, this is the Twitter world now, where judgment is harsh and anything can
be taken out of context. That’s already happened with Gruden this year,
even before he could officially meet with his players. In February, he
answered a question about analytics by saying he was trying to “take the
game back to 1998.” That was harped on as a sign he doesn’t get the era
of the read-pass option (RPO). I’d say 10 years in the booth, watching games and analyzing plays has shown him he could still put a team out there that could win.
We’ll have to wait and see. A lot of people say Jon Gruden is overrated. I don;t tend to agree with them. I’m not saying he’s a hall of famer… but he’s good.
He’s overrated in the aspect that he’s not the demigod people make him out to be, not that he’s a bad football coach. Even bad NFL football coaches are better than 99% of football coaches. He’s not even a bad NFL coach, but he hasn’t proven he’s great, either.

One NFL rule change I’d make is on the stiff arm to the face mask. Anywhere else on the field if you touch a guys face mask you are penalized. But a RB can stick his hand in your grill and make your head go sideways without a penalty.
I think the rule is they can be flagged for it. But refs don’t.
I think they can be flagged if they grab it and turn your head. But anybody else would be called for illegal hands to the face if they were blocking, or rushing the passer, or trying to press a WR at the line of scrimmage or whatever and even brushed your face mask inadvertently.

First of all, I suspect that this is just one of the president’s off the cuff thoughts, but if it’s not, I strongly disagree with taking this money out of the military budget when DoD has been budget-starved for many years in things like acquisition and other areas. Plus, off the top of my head, I’m not sure if it’s even legal for the active duty military to build a border wall.
But again, I suspect this is just a presidential musing more than anything else.

Nope . I do all the cooking and basically I just fix the things I grew up on . Every once in awhile i’ll venture outside my comfort zone and actually use a recipe . I kind of enjoy it.
One thing I recommend to people who like cooking but are in that kind of comfort zone space and wanting to change it up once in a while.
Try getting one of those blue apron type deals, to get some easy recipes that are outside what you are usualy cooking. I started doing it time to time because like you, I’ve probably got 20 things I can make, and do from memory all the time. But that stuff can get you to mix in some Asian cooking or what have you.
I do get tired of the same things . When I try a new recipe which isn’t often , have to go the grocery store for specific items that I don’t normally keep. So it takes a little planning . I tried a couple things from the Pioneer Woman . My wife laughed at me for watching a cooking show but she didn’t mind eating it .
That’s why I liked doing the box thing, they send you everything you need except things like salt and oil.

I’m 100% in favor of commercial development like this. I think it’s great. That in no way means that any state or local government will fund something like this. They won’t. A stadium? Yes. An entire upscale commercial development with retail and restaurants? No.
If its private, fine. But we know some teams are gonna push for public funds.
Not like this, they won’t. And I’m okay with public funding for stadiums to a certain extent. Stan Kronke and Paul Allen might be the only owners (at least off the top of my head) who could finance a stadium project by themselves.

I actually am very happy to hear that the Redskins are finally making a needed upgrade to their medical facility. Fans have known forever that the rap is that nothing at Redskins park is the “NFL’s best”. So anything they are willing to finally put more money into improving is a great, great sign.

I’m working on a hemp bread recipe. California is indeed taking that tact. For every 700,000 or so illegals that don’t respond, they lose 1 Representative in Congress. Est are that what 12-16 million of them live in the US, fwiw, not sure how inaccurate those numbers are, but it is conceivable that California could lose out on Representatives and I would guess certain types of formula money.

And if you know anything about Consitutional Law, it’s not as simple as taking a single word and interpreting it as you would normally do so today in your own modern average context. The enumeration is being done for the purposes of apportioning representation in the government; if you think the mandate and the Framers who wrote it had in mind that they were including people illegally entering the country who do not have a right to be there in that calculation, then please…lay out the argument.
Because there is PLENTY of material showing the concern of the framers that their elections could be manipulated by foreign powers infiltrating the state (for example – the creation of the electoral college.)
As a rule the framers knew how to distinguish between all people and U.S. citizens, and they chose not to say citizens in this case. The fact is that non-citizens have *many* constitutional rights in the U.S. It’s also a fact that the census is taken not just for the determination of representation, but also for purposes of taxation. Again, by it’s own terms.
But you aren’t trying to protect “non-citizens”, you are trying to protect “illegals”. People who are legally in the US working and paying taxes as non-citizens are fine. You don’t want to ask about citizenship because you are concerned it will dissuade illegals from being counted in the census and you would then like those illegals to be counted for purposes of apportioning representation. That’s ridiculous and preposterous, and that is on its face contrary to the purpose of upholding the laws of the country. If anything it is subversive to it.

I’ve had the Redskins taking Da’Ron Payne for a while, and I still believe he’s a very likely selection. However, that would change if Minkah Fitzpatrick falls to them. Fitzpatrick is a stud defensive back, and it would be difficult for Washington to pass on him.
And yes, it’s possible for Fitzpatrick to fall to No. 13. Teams will trade up for quarterbacks, and we’ve seen the safety market move very slowly in free agency. Plus, as Charlie Campbell reported in the NFL Hot Press, some teams have Derwin James rated above Fitzpatrick.

The coach does value the running game. He said it, and he proved it via his playcalling last year.
In the second game of the season against the Rams, we came out in the first and second quarters and ran the hell out of the ball scoring TD’s with big runs and racking up something like 170 yards. Then two things happened. First Kelley went down to injury and second, the Rams began stacking the box and began mixing in some run blitzes. This strategy worked as Perine came in and didn’t do anything of note. it was fun watching the run game that first half though.

We lost Murphy who had 1 good year and apparently that was thanks to steroids or some other PED so the test say. He also got an outrageous contract from Buffalo for his level of production.

I have to say that we somehow beat some very good teams last year and should have a beat a couple more with one of the most rag-tag rosters ever assembled. Lanier in particular stood out on the D line late in the year, batting down 3 passes in one game, including on the goal line to prevent a score by the Cardinals that would have given them the lead in the 4th quarter and the receiver uncovered in the end zone. Maybe the front office believes teams with more grit and lesser talent are the way to go.
fix the defense and we will be better assuming AS does as well as you know who…
Alex Smith is a very good QB. He’ll produce. The rest of the team must do its part though or Championships ain’t happening.
With both Morgan Moses and TWill not available for OTAs, I’m thinking it might not be a bad idea to draft Connor Williams or Mike McGlinchey, both OTs, and kick them to LG. Nsekhe is also injured. Need depth if any of those guys goes down.

I did all of the hiring for my company when we were starting out and when I presented someone with a written offer and they asked me to take a few weeks to think about it, I usually found a reason to rescind because I want people that want to be a part of our organization.

Bruce is a pretty decent team president. What he sucks at is the GM role. They need to hire a real, full-time GM and let him do his thing. That could’ve been Doug Williams.

In traditionally structured NFL front offices, the team president doesn’t get too involved in football personnel decisions – really only things like approving an Alex Smith-type trade, contract negotiations with a 1st round pick, stuff like that. A team president oversees the business side, deals with sponsorships, interacts with the local political puh-bahs, deals with the owner, stadium issues, etc. By all accounts, the Redskins are in and have been in good shape on those fronts. It’s the on the field product that hasn’t been good, and I’m just telling you that the GM does that stuff on most teams.

But, where have we really improved on defense in the offseason? At best, we’ve kept even on defense (and more likely gotten slightly worse so far).
And, if we spend a draft pick on Dline, that’s a draft pick we can’t use to upgrade another position like RB, Guard, etc.

Pay attention to our division to see why we need him. and don’t assume things like selling the farm. He’s a proven commodity at a position of need on our team. I like many draft DT prospects but they’ve never played a down in the NFL. Some will exceed and others will fail to meet expecatations. Hankins, is proven. Period.
I think the team is also weighing (pun intended) Hankins as a Skin against drafting a D-line stud at pick #13. With the mad dash for QB’s in the first round and Barkley a lock to be taken that means at #13 the Redskins are looking at a D-line player who might well have deserved to be a top-5 pick.

Gruden doesn’t run the ball to set up the pass, it’s the opposite. With better, less injured offensive line play, we will be fine. The offense wasn’t the problem for us the last few years. Defense needs to be addressed in a big way
Gruden 100% wants to do that. The team wasn’t capable. The only significant resource they’ve spent on RBs in many years is the 3rd rounder on Matt Jones, and he was a total bust. It’s high time they brought in an elite talent at RB. It’s critical.
It isn’t if you measure by offensive output. Your statement doesn’t hold water. How many rushing yards did we allow last few years? How many game winning drives did we allow? Our defense has been the problem.
Dude, Gruden tried hard to feed Perine, and wanted to do it with Kelley, but those two were either hurt or not good. Gruden’s flat-out said as much, and both Williams and Gruden and stressed the need for a RB several times recently.
I’m not saying we couldn’t use better rb’s I am saying in spite of their jag status, and horrific instability of line play, our offense did enough to win more games had the defense stopped a few teams.

I honestly didn’t think that when I started preparing for this piece, but after watching his film, I think the Redskins got it right as long as he can limit the drops.
The drops are my big concern. I’ve seen him make some fantastic catches, but they were on soft passes that were floating. I’m hopeful that he can snatch passes, but I haven’t seen him do that.
Some of his drops are just mind-boggling. Like, wide open, bounce right off his hands kind of drops.
