Roster Updates – Free Agency

The Commanders made no roster changes this past week.

Draft Data

This week, there was an increase of 21 in the number of mocks being tracked, which rose to a total of 311 mocks tracked. Sixty percent of mock pick data occurred in last few weeks. The distribution for Washington by position is:

The two big winners this week in gains were safety and offensive tackle. Yes, for some strange reason mock draft prognosticators think that the Commanders need to invest more in that position. The big losers were edge and linebackers, as the picks move more towards safety and running back. The total for offensive line is now 7, or 2.25% of the pool.

Washington holds the 7th pick in the first round. The players mocked to Washington with that pick are:

Love remained at the top spot, while Downs moved ahead of Bailey. Delane stayed in 7th place but picked up another 0.6% of the pool. The new picks this week on the list are Spencer Fano, Monroe Freeling and Kevin Concepcion. Concepcion was because of a trade back with the Rams (makes sense), but I don’t understand the logic of people thinking Washington drafts a tackle with the 7th pick.

Draft Thoughts

As we get even closer to the draft, more analysts are projecting trades among the top 10 picks.

My thoughts on draft day trades for Washington are:

  • I do not see the Commanders moving up for Love because it would take the first-round pick from this year and likely the first or second round pick from 2027 to do that. It does not make financial sense today with the value of running backs in the league.
  • I think a trade back is very possible.  Kansas City, Miami and the Los Angeles Rams are all potential trade partners. We have seen the Washington front office doing a lot of due diligence on players that should be drafted in the 10-20 slots.

I do not even rule out a trade back with a premium player on the board when it is Washington’s turn to pick, if the trade package is good enough, say KC offers Wiashington picks 9 and 40 to be able to draft Love. I think Adam Peters takes that trade. With that pick at 40, it opens the possibility to draft a player like defensive tackle Kayden McDonald, edge rusher Malachi Lawrence, interior offensive lineman Emmanuel Pregnon, cornerback Keionte Scott, or wide receiver Chris Bell. Washington would then have another player who could develop into a multi-year starter for the team.
