Part two of this series will investigate receiving records for wide receivers and tight ends.
Let’s test your team knowledge! Just click the twisty to reveal the answer.
WR – Most Receiving Yards in a Season by a Rookie
A lot of people will probably be thinking of Terry McLaurin, but he comes in second. Gary Clark still holds the record he set in 1985 with 926 yards. McLaurin came at 919 yards in his 2019 rookie season. Anthony Armstrong (I know, right!) comes in third with 871 yards in 2010.
WR – Most Receiving Yards in a Season
Santana Moss holds this record with 1,483 yards in 2005. That season, the offense ranked 11th overall and 7th in rushing, plus 20th in passing. Prior to Moss, Hall of Famer Bobby Mitchell set the record in 1963 with 1,436 yards in the predominantly run focused era. He broke his own 1962 record of 1,384 yards.
WR – Most Career Receiving Yards
Hall of Famer Art Monk set the record with 12,026 yards. No other player has over 10,000 yards so it is very unlikely this record will get broken anytime soon. McLaurin should pass the 7,000-yard mark this season.
WR – Most Receiving Touchdowns in a Season by a Rookie
The record from 1982 still stands at 8 receiving touchdowns by Charlie Brown. Jahan Dotson and Terry McLaurin are tied for second with 7 touchdowns.
Everyone can root for Antonio Williams to try and break this mark this year.
WR – Most Receiving Touchdowns in a Season
If you said Terry McLaurin for this category, you are correct. He set the mark in the 2024 season with 13 touchdowns breaking a three-way tie between Ricky Sanders, Charley Taylor and Hugh Taylor who all had 12 touchdowns.
WR – Most Career Receiving Touchdowns
Many people might say Monk, but the answer is another Hall of Famer, Charley Taylor. He had 79 touchdowns in his 14-year career with the team. Monk comes in second with 65 touchdowns.
WR – Most Receptions in a Season by a Rookie
Gary Clark in 1985 with 72 receptions. McLaurin is third in this category, one behind Jamison Crowder who had 59 receptions his rookie year.
Clark set a single game record with 11 catches for 241 yards and 1 touchdown against the Giants in 1987. Interestingly, the record was broken the next year during the strike by Anthony Allen in a game against the Rams where he had 7 catches for 255 yards and 3 touchdowns.
WR – Most Receptions in a Season
How many of you remembered that Pierre Garcon broke Art Monk’s record in 2013 with 113 catches? Monk is second with 106, while Moss is third with 93. Garcon set the record during a dismal 3-13 season was one of the few bright spots that year.
WR – Most Career Receptions
This is probably a pretty easy one for most fans: Art Monk had 888 career receptions. The next two players after Monk are Charley Taylor at 649 and Santana Moss at 581.
TE – Most Receiving Yards in a Season by a Rookie
In 2013 a third-round pick from Florida, Jordan Reed, had 499 receiving yards breaking the record set by Stephen Alexander who had 383 yards in 1998.
TE – Most Receiving Yards in a Season
Jordan Reed, who could have been an all-time great except for all the injuries which cut his career short, had 952 yards in 2015, which was his best season with Washington. He had 11 touchdowns that year and averaged 68 yards per game in receiving.
TE – Most Career Receiving Yards
Jerry Smith still holds the career mark with 5,496 yards in his 12-year career with the team. Chris Cooley is second with 4,711 yards and Jordan Reed is third with 3,371 yards.
TE – Most Receiving Touchdowns in a Season by a Rookie
Chris Cooley aka “Captain Chaos” holds the record with 6 touchdowns. That broke the mark set by Stephen Alexander in 1998 who had 4 touchdowns.
TE – Most Receiving Touchdowns in a Season
If you thought I gave you a Jordan Reed hint above, you were mistaken. Jerry Smith holds the record with 12 touchdowns in a season with Reed in second place.
TE – Most Career Receiving Touchdowns
Jerry Smith has 60 and is still not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Chris Cooley is in second place with 33 touchdowns in his career.
TE – Most Receptions in a Season by a Rookie
Jordan Reed had 45 receptions in his 2013 rookie campaign. He broke the mark of 37 catches held by Chris Cooley in 2004 and Stephen Alexander in 1998.
TE – Most Receptions in a Season
Jordan Reed had 87 receptions in his great 2015 season. Chris Cooley is in second place with 83 catches in the 2008 season.
TE – Most Career Receptions
Chris Cooley holds the record with 429 career receptions. He broke the Jerry Smith mark of 421 in the 2011 season.
