Roster Updates – Free Agency

There were no major roster changes for Washington in the past week.

Draft Data

This week saw an increase of 14 in the number of mocks being tracked which rose to 258 mocks tracked. Sixty-six percent of mock pick data occurred in last few weeks. The distribution for Washington by position is:

Position Picked Count Picked % Last Week % % Change
Edge 98 37.98% 45.90% -7.92%
LB 46 17.83% 16.80% 1.03%
S 39 15.12% 14.34% 0.77%
RB 35 13.57% 10.66% 2.91%
WR 31 12.02% 7.79% 4.23%
CB 6 2.33% 3.28% -0.95%
DL 2 0.78% 0.82% -0.04%
OT 1 0.39% 0.41% -0.02%
QB 0 0.00% 0.00% 0.00%
IOL 0 0.00% 0.00% 0.00%
TE 0 0.00% 0.00% 0.00%
Grand Total 258 100%

This week saw the full impact of free agency on the mock draft picks. The biggest decrease was at edge rusher, which was down nearly 8% from last week. Wide receiver, running back and linebacker all saw significant increases. Safety also was up over three quarters of a percent.

Washington holds the 7th pick in the first round. The players mocked to Washington with that pick are:

Player Position School Picked Count Picked %
David Bailey Edge Texas Tech 51 19.77%
Rueben Bain Edge Miami 44 17.05%
Caleb Downs S Ohio State 39 15.12%
Sonny Styles LB Ohio State 35 13.57%
Jeremiyah Love RB Notre Dame 35 13.57%
Carnell Tate WR Ohio State 26 10.08%
Arvell Reese LB Ohio State 11 4.26%
Mansoor Delane CB LSU 6 2.33%
Makai Lemon WR USC 4 1.55%
Keldric Faulk Edge Auburn 3 1.16%
Peter Woods DL Clemson 2 0.78%
Francis Mauigoa OT Miami 1 0.39%
Jordyn Tyson WR Arizona State 1 0.39%
Grand Total 258 100.00%

The top 5 places remain unchanged this week, but Downs, Styles and Love all gained ground on Bailey and Bain, who both dropped around 4% each. Draft prognosticators are trending away from edge rushers as the round one pick for the Commanders and are distributing the choice across Downs, Styles, Love and Tate.

Draft Thoughts

2 Jets Arvell Reese LB Ohio State
3 Cardinals Francis Mauigoa OT Miami
4 Titans David Bailey Edge Texas Tech
5 Giants Jeremiyah Love RB Notre Dame
6 Browns Monroe Freeling OT Georgia
7 Commanders Carnell Tate WR Ohio State
8 Saints Rueben Bain Edge Miami
9 Chiefs Mansoor Delane CB LSU
10 Bengals Caleb Downs S Ohio State
11 Dolphins Jermod McCoy CB Tennessee
12 Cowboys Sonny Styles LB Ohio State
13 Rams Spencer Fano OT Utah
14 Ravens Olaivavega Ioane IOL Penn State
15 Buccaneers Akheem Mesidor Edge Miami
16 Jets Makai Lemon WR USC
17 Lions Kadyn Proctor OT Alabama

24 Browns Jordyn Tyson WR Arizona State
25 Bears CJ Allen LB Georgia
26 Bills Cashius Howell Edge Texas A&M
27 49ers Blake Miller OT Clemson
28 Texans Lee Hunter DL Texas Tech
29 Chiefs Colton Hood CB Tennessee
30 Dolphins Kevin Concepcion WR Texas A&M
31 Patriots Emmanuel McNeil-Warren S Toledo
32 Seahawks T.J. Parker Edge Clemson

It’s hard to actually predict what happens on draft day because there are always a few trades that occur during the draft.  For example, do the Dolphins or Cowboys try and move up for an elite player since they have good draft capital?

Outside of the first pick of the draft, most of the next 7 selections are up in the air, which is unlike most years when the first three to five picks are more or less locked down.

Who does Washington take? Well, they do need a quality wide receiver to pair with Terry McLaurin. The Tate pick would give them that and a future beyond McLaurin, if Tate performs as expected.

The real answer is that the actual pick may not matter that much in the grand scheme of things. Players like Downs, Love, Styles and Bailey would all add much needed talent to the roster and potentially be starters for years to come.

The Commanders need better, younger, faster talent on the team and all the players mentioned fit that bill. The team has a couple of years before they must hand out a $50 million dollar per year contract to Jayden Daniels, so the time to lay a good foundation around him is now.
