Not only did the Commanders lose the game to the Cowboys they played very undisciplined football. In one game they nearly doubled their season total for penalties (12) with eleven in just the one game.

Through week 4 of games, 761 penalties have been enforced in 64 games, yielding an average of 5.94 penalties per team per game. Washington had been called for 23 penalties across 4 games for an average of 5.75 penalties per game, which is just under the league average.

The top 5 penalty calls across the league are:

Game Impactors

Offensively, the Commanders could not get out their own way, frequently committing penalties which put them into second or third and long situations. That allowed the Dallas pass rush to tee off against an offensive line compromised by injuries. Carson Wentz also needs to learn to throw the ball away without drawing an intentional grounding penalty. Defensively, Washington lost two interceptions due to penalties committed during the play. Also, William Jackson committed 65 yards worth of defensive pass interferences penalties. Giving opposing teams a shorter field doesn’t help the defense stop drives, especially when the offense is not producing giving the opponents more offensive chances.

Miscellaneous Thoughts

William Jackson has become a double threat now, with mental mistakes in coverage and technique mistakes that draw penalties. That isn’t a good sign for a top free agent signing.
