From a penalty perspective, we got to see a rare call in the Philadelphia game, an Illegal Blindside Block on an Eagle punt return. In 2021, there were 3,339 penalties called across 544 games. This penalty was on called 12 times last year or 0.36% of all penalty calls.

Through 3 weeks of games, 568 penalties have been enforced in 48 games yielding an average of 5.92 penalties per team per game. Washington had been called for 12 penalties across 3 games for an average of 4 penalties per game which is under the league average.

Game Impactors

The only game-impacting penalties occurred when the game was long out of reach for Washington. The Eagles committed two penalties on Washington’s only touchdown driver. A defensive holding penalty gave the Commanders a first down on a third down and 13 yards to go situation. Then, on the subsequent play, a face mask penalty was called on an 8-yard completion to Antonio Gibson moving the ball down the Eagles 37-yard line. Washington was able to score 7 plays later.

Miscellaneous Thoughts

Rachad Wildgoose picked up two defensive pass interference calls in the first half. He did end up playing 69% of the defensive snaps in the game, so maybe it was just nerves and poor technique.

Charles Leno picked up two false starts against the relentless Eagles pass rush. This is uncharacteristic of Leno as he had only two penalties in all of 2021 (one false start and one for holding).
