Schedule Preview – Giants

August 9, 2022

By Noonefromtampa

Washington’s opponent for weeks thirteen and fifteen is another Commanders NFC East opponent, the New York Giants. In a scheduling quirk, the two games are separated by a bye week. Last season Washington swept the Giants. This year the Giants have completely changed their coaching staff and front office. It will also be the make-or-break year for quarterback Daniel Jones.

Giants Coaching

Brian Daboll is the new head coach, replacing the fired Joe Judge. He had great success in developing Josh Allen for the Bills and the hope is he will be able to work wonders with Daniel Jones.

Mike Kafka comes over from the Chiefs where he was the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator. He has been an NFL coach for five years.

Don Martindale, a long time NFL assistant, comes over from Baltimore, where he spent the four previous seasons as the Ravens’ defensive coordinator prior to being released during the offseason. His 2018 and 2019 Ravens defenses were top ranked in the NFL. Since then, they slipped down the past two years and was the reason for his release.

Giants Schemes

Brian Daboll ran the Erhardt-Perkins system in Buffalo. So, the assumption is that the Giants will run a similar system in 2022. Erhardt-Perkins is similar to the West Coast offense with the ideas of route concepts, but it had a very abbreviated language used to call plays.

Martindale primarily ran a 3-4 style defense with 4-2-5 mixed in on passing downs. It is expected that the Giants will run a similar scheme in the 2022 season.

Conclusions

Since Washington doesn’t play the Giants until later in the season, it’s hard to say if Daniel Jones will even be the starting quarterback when they play. If he struggles under his third coach in four years, the Commanders may be facing Tyrod Taylor. A lot of their offseason additions have focused on rebuilding their offensive line and the defense overall.

Noone’s Prediction

I think we split games with the Giants this year, losing the away game in week 13 and winning the home game in week 15. Both games should be close games probably decided by a touchdown or less. The unpredictable factor here is that if the Giants season has gone into the toilet, they make be playing more for draft position rather than wins at the point of the season when Washington plays them. So, two victories over the Giants are not out of the question.
