2021 Draft Preview – Offensive Tackles

February 25, 2021

By Noonefromtampa

We’ll take a look at offensive tackles in this draft preview. While not a position of great need for the Washington Football Team, it is a position that they may look at for depth in the draft. The 2020 backup tackle, David Sharpe, is a free agent and may not be re-signed.

Who is going where?

Depending on which draft prognosticator you follow, Sewell, Darrisaw, Cosmi and Slater are all potential first round picks. Leatherwood and Mayfield are likely second round picks. After that is gets highly dependent which teams like which players.

If you follow my mock draft column, you know that Darrisaw is frequently listed as a selection for WFT with their 19th pick. Cosmi Is mocked to WFT at #19 on some mocks too. My opinion is that the Washington will most likely draft an offensive line position later in the draft looking for a more developmental player versus an immediate starter. So Washington may be looking at players like Liam Eichenberg, Dillon Radnuz, Teven Jenkins or Alaric Jackson.

Notes on Few Key Players

Penei Sewell – Multi-year starter, 2019 Outland Trophy winner. He opted out of the shortened 2020 Pac 12 season. He’s nother big, strong, athletic Samoan player from the Pac 12. He’s probably the most well-rounded offensive lineman in the draft.

Christian Darrisaw – Steadily improved over the course of career at Virginia Tech. He is quick and athletic, but some teams have concerns over his physicality at the next level. His pass protection skills are better than his run blocking which is usually the opposite of most collegian players.

Samuel Cosmi – Showed his versatiity by playing 4 games at right tackle and 21 games at left tackle. At this point he is probably a better run blocker than pass blocker and needs to improve on his strength for the NFL.

Rashawn Slater – Opted out in 2020 and is one of the players over whom talent evaluators are divided. He had a great game against Chase Young at tackle, but many evaluators think his more natural pro position is guard or center.

Alex Leatherwood – Thought about coming out last year, but opted to return to Alabama and was rewarded with a national championship. Another player who has played both guard and tackle in college, projected as a right tackle or guard in the pros.

Jalen Mayfield – A solid, dependable player who is a two-year starter that faced many first and second round edge rusher picks in games. Projects as an immediate starter at right tackle.

Teven Jenkins – His stock has been rising a lot lately. He projects as a right tackle, but many evaluators see him moving inside to guard at the next level.
