How Scott Turner has recognized J.D. McKissic’s production as a life-line for his offense

For an offense that has been abysmal at times throughout the season, the Washington Football team still has found sparks from skilled players not named wide receiver Terry McLaurin. Tight end Logan Thomas has come up big in recent weeks, as have wide receiver Cam Sims and the obvious in running back Antonio Gibson. However, running back J.D. McKissic is not only saving grace for Washington’s offense, but McKissic is also having a career year. His production this year is also important because Gibson’s playing status is in doubt due to his turf toe injury, which has increased McKissic’s role has increased and and made him become much more pivotal for this offense.

So, where does McKissic stand statistically this year? He currently has 725 yards from scrimmage, averaging 5.8 yards per touch. His yards per touch currently rank 4th at his respective position, only behind Alvin Kamara, Nick Chubb, and D’Andre Swift. His rush attempts (66) are currently the highest of his career, and his receptions (58) are the most he has had in his career to date.

For obvious reasons, Washington’s offensive coordinator Scott Turner is highly aware of McKissic’s importance to this team, regardless of Gibson’s absence. Yesterday, Turner spoke on McKissic’s evolution in Washington’s offense.

“J.D. is a guy who can do it all. He’s a very intelligent player. We don’t worry about him moving around. He can really handle anything. He’s been a guy that’s worn multiple hats for us as far as playing the slot, playing in the backfield, both catching the ball in the backfield and running the ball. He’s got natural run skills and plays with good vision. You know you’re going to get everything he’s got every day, both mentally and physically. He’s the type of guy that you want on your team.”

McKissic is in a big spot for not just Washington now, but for himself. This is his opportunity to create a name for himself on a team that is quickly gaining steam from a national standpoint. Think of 2017, where Chris Thompson promptly rose as one of the top versatile third-down running backs in the NFL. McKissic has been approaching that type of recognition. The hope for Washington is that, for the next three weeks, McKissic continues to prove Turner to be right and remains an integral piece for the offense.
