Ron Rivera and the Washington Redskins continued their fairly aggressive trip through the free agency process on Thursday, signing tight end Logan Thomas and tackle Cornelius Lucas.

Thomas, 6’6″ and 250 pounds, was drafted as a quarterback out of Virginia Tech by the Arizona Cardinals in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL draft.  He ran the 40 yard dash in 4.54 seconds at the 2014 NFL Combine.  He spent just one season with the Cardinals before he was released prior to the start of the 2015 season.  From there, Thomas had stops with the Miami Dolphins and New York Giants before converting to tight end in 2016 with the Detroit Lions and joining their practice squad.  The Buffalo Bills then signed him to their active roster off of the Lions’ practice squad, and Thomas found a home there for the next three seasons.  He returned to the Lions for the 2019 season at his new tight end position.  In his career, Thomas has played 42 games, starting 8.  As a quarterback, he had 2 career passes for 10 yards, which includes 2 game appearances with the Cardinals and one pass in Buffalo.  As a tight end, Thomas has played in 40 games, starting 8, with 35 receptions in 54 targets, for a 64.8% catch percentage, and 2 touchdowns.  In 2019, he played in all 16 games, starting 3, and made 16 receptions in 28 targets for a 57.1% catch percentage and 1 touchdown.  Thomas has size, athleticism, and hands, but has not yet made a huge impact in regular season games.  He has showed flashes of ability, though, and could make an interesting project with hope for his future, particularly with his quarterbacking skills possibly put to use in some fashion by new offensive coordinator Scott Turner and his staff.

Lucus, who is 6’8″ and weighs 328 pounds, was originally signed in 2014 by the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent from Kansas St.  In his career, he’s played in 53 games, starting 16.  Lucas remained with the Lions until he was waived prior to the start of the 2017 season.  From there, Lucas had stops with the Rams in 2017, New Orleans in 2018, and the Chicago Bears in 2019.  His contract with the Redskins is a 2 year deal worth a total of $5.3M.  His signing in Washington may end up being more than it would seem at first glance, as we’ve been told that Lucas is a quality player with the ability to possibly challenge the embattled Morgan Moses for the starting job at right tackle.  Keep an eye out on Lucas.

The Hog Sty will continue to report on the Redskins’ free agent signings as they come in today and over the weekend.
