Redskins To Sign Collins When Free Agency Starts

With the pre-free agency tampering period underway the Washington Redskins seemingly have their first big move, and have a deal in place with coveted strong safety Landon Collins.  The move cannot become official until after the free agency period begins.

That is a major deal, and fills a major need for the Redskins. Collins was a three time Pro-Bowler with the rival New York Giants in 2016, 2017 and 2018 and was 1st team All-Pro in 2016.  He was a tackling machine, with 437 tackles in his four seasons in New York, along with 4 sacks and an interception.  Coming out of Alabama, Collins has been coveted by Skins fans from the time he first entered the NFL, for his physical play and his love of Redskins great Sean Taylor.  When he was drafted he said playing in Washington would be his dream situation as he grew up a Redskins fan.

At the beginning of the year few were expecting Collins to leave the Giants.  But the team did not seem interested in paying the kind of salary that Collins was asking for, as he said his good byes to his former teammates a few days ago. Meanwhile the New York media does what they do and tried to spin losing a star.

My personal take is that this could be the first major player for the next generation of the Redskins roster.  Whether they like it or not this team is going to have to rebuild in the next few years. Most of the stars and the big salaries belong to guys who are over 30 years old and the roster as it was last year didn’t look like it was ready to contend for a title run.  Hopefully signing a young player who will spend five years of his prime playing years here is just the begining of a new Redskins.
