The Redskins announced a number of roster moves this afternoon, including the re-signing of safety Deshazor Everett to a multi-year contract. Exact terms were undisclosed. Everett originally entered the NFL in 2015 as an undrafted free agent out of Texas A&M signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was signed by the Redskins prior to the start of the 2015 season and has remained in Washington ever since that time. Everett has played in 41 games, starting 8, and has been a fixture on special teams. In 2017, Everett started 8 games and made 52 total tackles. He just completed his original 3 year contract and was a Restricted Free Agent.
The Redskins also announced that the team waived offensive tackle Kevin Bowen and running backs Kenny Hilliard and Dare Ogunbowale.
In other news, the NFL Network reporter Mike Garafolo and others reported that the 2018 salary cap would be set at $177.2M:

Adding in the rollover amount from the 2017 season, the Redskins should have between $178M and $179M of total space. We’ll have a complete salary cap update in the coming days.

The NFLPA wants the offending team ban from the combine & loss of draft picks. I think that’s a bit much, maybe a 1 year combine ban, at the most.

Trading a 2nd round pick for a WR when starter talent at the position will be there to be drafted in the 2nd, is just goof. Especially with the guy having just one year left.
Draft the position and have the player for five years.

The way I see it we only have enough money to resign a couple of our guys, grab one starter and a couple depth guys in free agency. I think I’d go after a WR and some secondary depth in FA and then draft a DT and a G in the 1st 2 rounds.

Looking forward to Steve’s upcoming salary cap update. Skins will have a decent pool of money but have a bunch of roster spots to fill, plus need to set aside ~$4M for the draft and another few $M for emergencies. And maybe pad that emergency fund for surprise releases and camp cuts that can help.

With all the players on injured reserve, and replacement players brought in during the season, I think the Redskins ended the season last year with 83 players on the team (including practice squad). Going into camp you can only have 90 guys and that includes draft picks. Thus we’re seeing the beginnings of the trim down of the roster to make room for new guys they want to bring in.

The Eagles were 9mil over the cap before the trade for Bennett, they will need to start cutting some salary and then next year they will need to resign Wentz,
Brandon Graham and Vinny Curry are the two best options that will free up about 15mil.
Of course that won’t cover the 9mil plus Bennetts 7.4 mil.
They can save 7.6 by trading Foles.
why would they get Bennett and move on from Graham ? That makes no sense to me .

i totally want to get zach brown back. i’d call that my #1 free agent priority. galette was coming on late. for draft: DL, then OL. the specifics of that are so impossible to predict and catch that i can’t say who.
This draft is so deep for interior DL. If possible I’d take two of them and plan on moving McGee and McClain as soon as it makes sense from a cap perspective. That’d give us Allen, Ioannidis, and two other young guys to hold down the middle for the foreseeable future.
We’re stuck with McClain this year, but McGee can be cut.

And then when you get to the brands you’ve heard of, you’re like heck no! I ain’t paying 3x, 5x, 10x as much for something that I’m bound to trash within six months either way. Paul was in the league a lot longer than most people expected. I mean, he wasn’t anywhere near the WR that Maurice Purify was (2nd mention today, wow) and Purify ended up as just a superstar in the Arena league. 7 years in the league. That’s a nice run if this is the end.

We, “royal we” are thinking that the plan for the team is to try and fill starting holes as much as they can in FA this year to free up moves they can make in the draft.
I think the goal has been in recent years to stay somewhat medium in FA, just warm enough so that you mostly can go BPA in the draft

A bigger problem than that is ignoring game film, not evaluating scheme and what a player is being ask to do, gauging competition, and totally fudging up the projection.

Every year you’ve got high-level analysts who poo poo athletic scores, saying “just watch the film.” But if you look at data over the last 10-15 years, there’s a high correlation between busts and prospects who test poorly. There’s a very small chance that a prospect who tests terribly will go on to become a top tier NFL player.

The defense as a whole wasn’t very well built, and front 7 was a joke, Jason Hatcher shouldn’t have played at all. Was the season where we started with Perry Riely and Keenan Robinson at ILB.

That’s my point – why sign another true NT who’s barely going to play? They really aren’t in base 3-4 much. I think Jay wants versatile DLmen, not guys who can only play 1 position.
It won’t work.
Issue wasn’t that the NT position wasn’t important, it was that Knighton wore down and had trouble keeping weight off and the Pats offered him more the following season. The first half to second half effectiveness was clear in the stats. The Skins continued to use guys at NT (like Baker, they switched him over). The Skins wanted a true NT this past season, they were going to roll with Phil Tyalor and they were looking forward to having him play, but he got injured.
I was very disappointed how out of football shape he turned out to be.

It’s worth it to eat up blockers and space and will make J.Allen more effective. Allen has the potential to be a real difference maker. You bring in a guy like that to be Allen’s wing-man.
The year we had Pot Roast in the middle was – interestingly enough – also Chris Baker’s best year.

I think last year the concern was that he might have been a one-year wonder. Now he’s put 2 good seasons together, but fact remains that ILB is simply not a premium-value position. He may end up pricing himself out of decent money if he waits too long in FA and the good money goes quickly.

but at the same time, I doubt it actually has much effect on sales, because an ignorant guess would be that the money marketing is having that hot pizza visual placed just at the right time when people are hungry, and that happens via commercials, not interstitials where a logo is shown. and it would be very different is the “official” contract included exclusive commercial rights during the games, but it doesn’t. prob on a thing like a podcast, it would actually be the opposite, where a testimonial interstitial would be more impact than a commercial that people would just skip. and the buyer had to be aware of the declining sales, which was a known thing, so I wouldn’t think in this case that it would even be worth the lawyer cost to consider.
and yeah, if you think about it, either they both knew or the buyer should have known he was buying right before an announcement was made on the new contract, so he/she was either buying on an assumption, or with knowledge, and at least should have had contingency in the contract knowing that it was an imminent

So, devil’s advocate:
Short shelf life of the position is actually a reason FOR taking a RB high in the draft (the draft in general) because you should be concerned that he’s mostly used up by the drafting team if you believe best five years are 1-5.
1st round gives you an extra contract year, and in a Bell situation, you get him for 7 years before you drop him like a rock.
RBs have generally been 1 of the positions where you can expect them to do well in year 1, making the transition well from college.
Still, it’s not something you should do very often and you don’t do it “because we need a RB” you do it because the guy on the board is legit BPA and someone you aren’t able to draft in every draft. Not sure this team this year (again, save for the rule-breaker being available) should take a RB in the 1st, and I don’t think that just getting a “better” RB fixes the running game, even on “and short” downs. Could be wrong.

That may be the reason, but I don’t think it makes a ton of sense. If you get five or six years of top production out of your first round pick you’re doing well. Even if you pick a guy who might have a 12 year shelf life, there’s no guarantee you’re going to be able to re-sign him for his second and/or third contract.

Seems like running back and wide receiver have done the old switcheroo. For some time it wasn’t worth taking a RB early, because the top picks weren’t doing much better than mid-round guys. Now the early round RB is back in vogue and it seems like Day 1 WRs aren’t living up to their billing. I think that will be the case this year.

Penny or Michel in round 2 would be good. Go DL in round 1….Rounds 4-7 depth special teams type guys who may become starters sometime down the line…next man up types.

But the general is out getting 3 bids to see which team he wants to lead. #Fail. But the OTHER side of this, the pragmatic side, is no different than you or I getting up from the table with that roofer, or car salesman, or whatever to see what other contractors are willing to do the work for, what alternative ideas they might have on how to do it or materials etc., OR to even see if that is the very best you can get out of that salesman/company. But if, for example it’s a used car, unique in price and condition, well, that doggone salesman is going to sell it if you wait too long.
However, the more “this is just business” it becomes, the less the fans will be able to um… “participate” or be interested in, the simulation. So, at some point it’s bad for NFL business, and that’s why free agency isn’t so free.
