Game Recap Week 9 – Seattle Seahawks at Washington Commanders

Commanders Blown Out Again by Seattle 38-14

First Quarter

The Commanders started on offense after Luke McCaffrey returned the opening kickoff 19 yards out to the Washington 26 yard line. Washington was able to pick up one first down on the drive on a 9 yard completion to Zach Ertz. An illegal blindside block penalty on Tyler Biadasz set them 15 yards. The Commanders were unable to convert, picking up only 12 yards of 25 needed yards. Tress Way was able to pin the Seahawks on their own 10 yard line.

Washington’s defense was unable to stop the Seahawks, who went on a 90 yard scoring drive. Receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba had three big plays on the drive ,including a run of 11 yards and receptions of 13 and 14 yards. Kenneth Walker III gained 27 yards on the ground and had a key 14 yard catch on a third down.  After a Marshon Lattimore pass interference penalty, rookie Tory Horton caught a 4 yard touchdown pass from Sam Darnold for a 7-0 lead.

After Jacory Corskey-Merritt ran for two yards, Jayden Daniels scrambled for 6 yards. Washington got a first down via a holding call on the Seahawks defense. Croskey-Merritt ran twice for 9 yards but Jeremy McNichols was stopped for no gain on third down to end the quarter.

Second Quarter

Dan Quinn elected to go for it on fourth down where Daniels hit John Bates for 10 yards and the first down.  Deebo Samuel picked up 9 yards on a catch and run. Then bad things started to happen. Croskey-Merritt lost a yard and Chris Paul was called for a facemask penalty. On third and 17, Daniels threw at Jaylin Lane, but it was intercepted by Ty Okada at the Seattle 40 yard line.

It took Seattle only 7 plays to move 60 yards and score again. Smith-Njigba started the drive with a 17 yard catch and Horton ended it with a 25 yard touchdown reception. The extra point was good, making it a 14-0 lead.

Lane fumbled the kickoff return and Seattle recovered it at the Washington 26 yard line. Elijah Arroyo scored on the next play and with the extra point it was a 21-0 lead.

Washington gained on 9 yards and Ertz committed a false start on fourth and short to force another Way punt.

Seattle needed only 4 plays to score from 87 yards away. Smith-Njigba had a 22 yard catch on the third play which was also third down. Darnold then threw deep to practice squad elevation Cody White who broke through Quan Martin to score a 60 yard touchdown. The extra point made it a 28-0 lead.

Sameul took the ensuing kickoff back 30 yards to the 31 yard line. Daniels scrambled for 8 yards on first down. Chris Rodriguez gained the first down with a 4 yard run and followed it with a dash for 12 yards. Washington picked up another first down behind Samuel catch of 9 yards and Rodriguez’s 3 yard run. After the two-minute warning, Daniels found Lane for a 15 yard reception down to the Seattle 18. After a 5 yard run by Rodriguez and an incompletion, Daniels scrambled for 12 yards down to the one and scored on the next play. Matt Gay converted the extra point to make the score 28-7.

Seattle was able to get a field before the end of the half behind two catches by Smith-Njigba. The first one was for 20 yards and the second for 26 yards which was initially ruled out of bounds but was overturned on review. Jason Myers converted a 41 yard goal to make the score 31-7 at the half.

Third Quarter

Washingon’s defense able to force a three and out for the first time in the game.

After the punt, Washington was able to pick up 34 yards to start the drive with Croskey-Merrit rushing twice for 9 yards and Ertz catching a 25 yard pass. Then Daniels was sacked for a 7 yard loss and threw and incompletion on third down. Way punted it to the Seattle 12 where it was fair caught.

Jonathan Jones was called for pass interference on a questionable call for 28 yards. After Walker was stopped for gain, Darnold found Horton for 6 yards.  Mike Sainristil intercepted Darnold at the Washington 47.

Washington ran the 4 straight times between called running plays and Daniels scrambles for a total of 13 yards. Then Ertz was called for a false start, and Daniels was sacked for a one yard loss. On third and 15, there was an incompletion and declined penalty on Washington. Fouth down saw Daniels scrambled for 7 yards, which was a turnover on downs.

Darnold threw a shovel pass as he was being tackled to Zack Charbonnet for 21 yards. Smith-Njigba picked 10 yards on a reception and Walker ran for 11 yards. Javon Kinlaw was called for a facemask which put the ball on the three and Seattle scored two plays later for 38-7 lead.

After the touchback, Samuel had a 19 yard catch and run. Three plays later Daniels was sacked for 10 yard loss at midfield to end the quarter.

Fourth Quarter

Way punted the ball to the Seattle 14 where is was fair caught.

Washington’s defense caused a three ond out for the second time when Seattle ran the ball three times for 8 yards and the punted it away.

Croskey-Merritt started the next drive with a 5 yard run. Bates had a 10 yard catch. Washington got the benefit of a 15 yard penalty for taunting and Treylon Burks caught a 14 yard pass. Daniels was able to convert a third down with a 7 yard completion to Lane. Rodriguez ran 4 yards down to the Seattle 2. Daniels was tackled for a two-yard loss and suffered a horrific left arm injury. Marcus Mariota came in to hand off to Rodriguez for a 4 yard touchdown. Gay nailed the extra point to make the score 38-14.

Seattle went three and out again with a 58-yard punt.

Washington then essentially decided to run out the clock behind Croskey-Merritt and Rodriguez picking 39 yards on the ground.

Thoughts

If you can’t stop the opposing team’s offense until the game is out of reach, you won’t win many games in the NFL.

14 points off of turnovers didn’t help, but the defense could stop them in the first half anyway. Darnold started with 17 straight completions.

People will question why Daniels was in the game and running the ball when the were down 30+ points. And they should.

There is no quick fix for this and firing some random coach or benching players probably will not help even in the short-term
