Here’s a look at what happened in Week 3 between the scrimmage and preseason game with the Patriots.

Scrimmage

The most highly-covered part of the scrimmage was Mike Vrabel getting bloodied breaking up a fight at the scrimmage.

Some of the offensive highlights were:

Offensive Tackles – Laremy Tunsil and Josh Conerly both performed well. Tunsil showed why Washington traded for him, shutting down the left side. Conerly is still a work in progress and was up and down during the scrimmage, but did show he has the tools to be a good right tackle.

Quarterback – Jayden Daniels continued to have a great preseason making pinpoint throws. Marcus Mariota was held out with a leg strain, with Sam Hartman and Josh Johnson splitting the extra reps. Johnson looked better than Hartman in both the scrimmage and the game.

Receivers – With Terry McLaurin not playing, Deebo Samuel was the focus at wide receiver, while Zach Ertz continued to show his strong connection with Daniels. Samuel had a circus catch for a touchdown, while Ertz caught everything thrown his way.

Some of the defensive highlights were:

Daron Payne, Javon Kinlaw and Johnny Newton did a good job of clogging up the running lanes. The question will always be what sort of pass rush will the Commanders be able to generate.

Bobby Wagner showed that he can still be a force in the middle, tipping a pass to Mike Sainristil in the end zone for an interception.

The secondary should be much better than last year. Trey Amos matched up well against veteran receivers. Jonathan Jones and Noah Igbinoghene should be able to provide good depth.

Preseason Game

The Patriots played a much better, mistake free game and soundly beat the Commanders 48-18. The Commanders did not play 30 of their top players in the game, opting instead to evaluate younger players.

Sam Hartman did not look consistently good and misfired throws at several points when he was in the game. Josh Johnson looked better overall but neither quarterback got a lot of help from the receivers with too many dropped balls.

Miscues for Washington was the theme of the game, with:

  • 13 penalties for 98 yards
  • Two interceptions
  • Numerous dropped passes
  • 100 yard kickoff touchdown return given up
  • 62 yard kickoff return by former Commander Antonio Gibson
  • Blown coverages in the secondary
  • Missed tackles

Special teams were not that great for the entire game. New kicker Matt Gay missed a makeable 49 yard field goal attempt, which is ominous, foreboding sign.

Among the receivers:

Winners – Ja-Corey Brooks (5 catches on 5 targets for 59 yards) and Tay Martin (3/3 for 36 yards), Lawrence Cager (2/2 for 35 yards)

Losers – Michael Gallup (2/6 for for 27 yards and slipped on the interception), Cole Turner 0/1 for 0 yards)

Jacory Croskey-Merritt highlights
