Steven Montez (undrafted free agent)

Returning Players

Dwayne Haskins Jr

Alex Smith

Key Player Highlights

Dwayne Haskins Jr (6’4” / 230): He was last year’s first round pick and will have a new offensive scheme this year with offensive coordinator Scott Turner on board. The job is his to with which to excel or fail. From social media, we have seen him working hard in the offseason and the coaching staff seems to be excited to work with him. His play dramatically improved in the last few games of the season last year and everyone is hopeful that trends continues this season.

Kyle Allen (6’3” / 210) was acquired by the Redskins this offseason via trade to be Haskins’ backup. His knowledge of Turner’s offense is expected to help in the quarterback room. He did not set the world on fire with the Panthers last year in his 12 starts, throwing for 3,322 yards while posting a 62% completion rate with 17 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions, and was sacked 46 times. He is solid backup who can be counted on for a couple of games a year.

Alex Smith (6’4” / 213): the big question from everyone who watched the ESPN 30 for 30 documentary is whether he can play in the NFL again after all that damage to his leg. Only time will tell, but it is amazing that the doctors could save his leg.

Steven Montez (6’5” / 235): The rookie was a day 3 prospect at best but went undrafted and was signed by the Redskins after the draft.  While Montez has NFL size and arm strength, his play at Colorado was inconsistent at times. In his senior season, he threw for 2,808 yards, with 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Predictions

The team will probably keep 3 quarterbacks between the active roster and the practice squad. I don’t think Alex Smith will play this year. If Smith is placed back on the PUP list, I would not be surprised to see all three young quarterbacks on the roster. Dwayne Haskins is the starter for this team no matter what, regardless of what the national pundits say. He will have to lose the job before we see Allen as the starter. Whether the offensive succeeds in 2020 rests directly on Haskins’ shoulders.

Based on the reports of his offseason workouts, Haskins is taking this offseason very seriously. Scott Turner has also commented about how hard Haskins has been working in the video meetings. Until Haskins shows he has mastered the nuances of the new offensive scheme, I think he will be kept on a short leash. That should open up after the first few games.

Like with Alex Smith’s leg, only time will tell if the Redskins have found their young franchise quarterback that they have so long desired.
