Roster Moves: Redskins re-sign Quick, add punter Irwin-Hill

The Redskins announced today that the team has re-signed wide receiver Brian Quick. Quick, who stands 6’3″, weighs 218 pounds and is 28 years old, entered the NFL as a 2012 2nd round pick out of Appalachian St. by the St. Louis (now Los Angeles) Rams. He has played in 78 games in his career, including 24 starts, and has 111 receptions for 1,575 yards and 10 touchdowns. Last season, he played in 11 games and caught 6 passes for 78 yards. The terms of Quick’s contract were not available.
The Redskins also announced that they have signed punter Sam Irwin-Hill. Irwin-Hill entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent last year out of the University of Arkansas when he was signed by the Dallas Cowboys. He was waived by the Cowboys in September after making 15 punts during the 2017 preseason for an average of 38.3 yards per punt. Details of his contract were not available. Irwin-Hill is expected to compete with Redskins incumbent Tress Way during the coming offseason.

and he did not play a lot until after Allen and the other DL got hurt

Brown is fast, but if you look at those 3 LBs Brown, Smith, Kerrigan… I want a fast LB who can cover a lot of ground and tackle, doesn’t need to be a thumper but needs to be able, with maybe one of the S to clean up a RB on a route better than our OLB. But, yes, I imagine in the next few weeks the Redskins will shore up positions enough to go mostly BPA in a few spots rather than having a major starting hole going into the draft.
Look for Ryan Anderson to step up this season.

Quality line coach and nice talent in Jon Allen, 300 and Lanier with Kerrigan and PSmith (maybe Galette too) on the ends and ZBrown returning to that ILB spot. My uncle was a falconer when I grew up he had all sorts of birds of prey. Lived in South Florida. I remember as a teenager I took one of his traps and put a mouse in and caught a Kestrel. I was probably 14 and I didn’t know exactly what to do but I managed to bring him to his house without the bird biting my finger off or putting his Talons into me too deep. My uncle was so mad at me LOL!

What is fair for a guy that we took a chance on, rehabbed for 2 years, and played in nothing but meaningless games at the end of the year last year?

As far as Guards go, if we can get better pass protection from our backfield and TE, maybe a earn while you learn guy would get you by. A stronger running game with a good run-blocker that’s not as great at PP with a more mobile Quarterback… Might work.
I’m interested to see if Sprinkle gets better as a blocking TE this year. It would be nice if we didn’t have to draft one.

Signing Hankins or Logan would present the option of still taking someone like Payne early, or taking someone like Tremaine Edmunds, Nelson, or James early, and then adding a more mobile DT/DE like BJ Hill, PJ Hall, or Trenton Thompson in the middle rounds. This would set up taking a RB in the 2nd, or a good CB, ect. There’s no reason I can think of, short of them just not wanting to be here, or a ridiculous asking price, that would be a legitimate excuse to not sign them. Bruce being a tightwad cunthead is not acceptable, IMO.

I know Quick didn’t get a ton of PT because of the rotation/depth at WR but he did show to be a larger-bodied, possession type with nice hands. I am anxious to see how different our passing game looks with a new QB who likes to allow his receivers to make plays on the ball in a way Kirk was not. I think the addition of Alex Smith will show us what we’ve been missing with Doctson and others.

Thats a young d-line that can be around for a while add another rookie to that and d-line is good for a while.
Despite the Colts’ defensive line struggles in 2017, Hankins provided a level of consistency for the 4-12 squad. The 325-pound behemoth finished with 44 tackles, two sacks and five quarterback hits during his lone season in Indy.
Outside of Ndamukong Suh and Vinny Curry, Hankins might be the best run-stuffer available in free agency. He’ll surely draw interest from teams running the 3-4 that have salary-cap space to spare.

The article isn’t 100% clear on the timeline
in the way it presents the story – poor writing which creates
confusion. When you piece it together, here’s what took place:
The brain-trust (Doug Williams
included) had been pow-wowing about available QBs since the end of the
season and had apparently collectively come to the conclusion that if
they could get Alex Smith, he’d be the top guy they wanted.
From
there Bruce Allen apparently led the inquiries with KC. Because they
didn’t even know for sure if he’d be available. When they had a deal in
place to trade for Alex Smith, he called Jay and said – “Do you want
this guy?”, to which Jay said “Yup”.
Bruce finished the deal with
KC, and then, suspecting that some leaks might begin, contacted DW late
and told him “not to answer the phone” (ie – if reporters start calling
to confirm trade, if it leaks). The following morning BA laid out what
happened and swore the group to secrecy.
Williams and the other
execs were obviously and clearly part of the decision-making group that
targeted Smith as the top priority. It’s not clear when Jay Gruden
first knew that Smith was on the radar, but it’s pretty clear that he
was informed – and solicited for feedback – before pulling the trigger.
BA wanted to pull the group together and let everyone know in person
that the deal had been clinched and how to proceed together from there,
ostensibly to keep a tight circle and everyone on the same page. But
since the deal happened in the dead of night, he sent a text.
There
is nothing wrong with this timeline. Whatever bitching, moaning,
controversy or misconduct you read into this is your own.

He was THE worst ILB in the NFL in coverage last year. But the thing is, that shouldn’t be the case. In prior years he was above average in coverage. I’ve got to think Manusky’s scheme had something to do with it.
He’s actually been one of the higher ranked ILB’s in pass coverage. His speed is an asset there. Could simply be getting familiar with the scheme or the scheme itself.
Could be that. Might also have to do with the players around him, since we had a revolving door at SS. In some games he was also asked to call the defense which he hadn’t done before.

Yes really, I think we are less talented today than when the season ended. That is my opinion. We lost Kirk, Fuller, Breeland, Murphy, Paul and added Smith, Richardson and a punter. The offseason isn’t over so we may still improve our talent but I think we were a mediocre team at best anyway so unless we significantly upgrade our talent we ain’t a playoff team.

Unfortunately there’s probably not much that can be done to Trump … at least until he’s out of office. He may be impeached in the House, if the Dems regain the majority, but Republicans in the Senate will never convict. And I don’t think the courts will allow Mueller to prosecute Trump while he’s in office.
So Trump stays in office while there’s a midterm massacre. Anyone who supports him will have a target painted on them going into the 2020 elections as well.
The GOP will be fine. There’s always a backlash at the midterm against the party in power. As long as the good guys keep one of the houses of Congress, preferably the Senate, the country will survive.

Flynn took a plea deal because he decided that it would be better to cooperate with Mueller than go to jail for 10 years or more.

the problem with the whole thing is the Parties. the idea isn’t bad, but when you combine the Party system with Democracy you get furthering of a flaw… the flaw of making any decision by voting (elections, small workgroups, doesn’t matter) is that the single advantage voting has over every other way of making decisions is… it’s fast and decisive. It usually falls well short of the best. But it’s fast. Even more “primative” societies criticize modern large democracies in that way. and having only two choices means that all choices eventually become a black and white for each individual issue. two things help this. you try to eliminate group think by getting rid of the parties, and you move unless absolutely necessary (like military) everything to smaller groupings of government. this is how tribes across the world did it. and it was originally in part what our government was modeled after.
