tKelly Bell Band always fucking rocked. Used to catch them up in Frederick at Old Town Tavern (had an apartment right up the street from there). yeah, yeah, i know everyone hates Balmer up here, but KBB was a big feature on Kirk, Mark and Lopez (98 Rock Baltimore) back in the day, that was my favorite morning show in the area until i moved to AZ in 2004.

    • King Kerry

chicks always taking off they shirts during certain songs when Bell said to, it was cray.

This guy used to play at the Zoo Bar ever Tuesday night, way back in the day. A 5-minute walk from my door, Always a good time.

He was awesome. I didn’t appreciate him until about 10-15 years ago. When I was young I thought he was all flash. It wasn’t till I was older that I saw the substance.

do you know the song “peggy-o”?

      • Big Buck64

        By Stapleton ?

        • walter_in_fallschurch

it’s an old traditional ballad. more folk than country, as i know it. something in that video you posted remanded me of it. there are many great grateful dead versions of it. they are very folk/country when they wanna be.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xOgD8HuGRo

just close your eyes and let it wash over you.

          • Big Buck64

          • SCamp

Never was a Dead fan? WHAT?

Followed those guys for a year before Jerry died. Don’t remember a ton of it

          • walter_in_fallschurch

they were a shell of what they once were by then. i’ve never “followed them”, but saw just about every va and md show for several years. 25-30 shows, i’d guess.

“a shell”… i say that, but still they were great shows. just not like mid-70s shows.

          • SCamp

Yea, they were… but the scene was still fun and if you’d eaten enough acid their shows were GREAT!

…and I was just out of high school so… it was worth it

          • SCamp

I remember some pretty great renditions of Smokestack Lightning and Fire on the Mountain that changed my life (at least for that day)

          • walter_in_fallschurch

what did one deadhead say to another when they ran out of pot?

          • SCamp

I wouldn’t think they could talk through the crying… but maybe… these guys suck?

          • walter_in_fallschurch

yup. kinda funny, but not true anymore. i can jump my mind right into that place w/o pot nowadays.

          • SCamp

They really are the quintessential American folk rock band

          • Big Buck64

You been to the Hampton Coliseum then I guess. They played there quite a few times . people sleeping in tents all over the place

          • walter_in_fallschurch

absolutely been there. called it “the spaceship”. slept in my car many a time in that mud parking lot.

          • Big Buck64

I don’t think a whole lot of people clearly remember it . Wasn’t my thing .

          • walter_in_fallschurch

thanks for listening. they cover “big river” by johnny cash, too. me and bobby mcgee (excellent version of that) and lots of folk/country songs.

          • Big Buck64

I’ve heard them do Bobby McGee

    • SCamp

      Nice

  • walter_in_fallschurch

i hope they figure out a better way to do replay.

i like replay. i want to get the calls right. everytime i look at a replay i can tell in 1 or 2 replays, maybe a third for a difficult play, and 10-15 seconds what the correct call is. why the heck does it take another minute or 2 or 3 for the refs to sort it all out?

    • Zig-Zag_BC

      $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

      • walter_in_fallschurch

        i don’t know…. i think it drives viewers away.

        • SCamp

…but it allows for more commercials. And them things are EXPENSIVE!

          • walter_in_fallschurch

i change channels when they get bogged down in replay nonsense.

          • SCamp

I typically DVR… but companies pay for commercials… not viewers

    • SCamp

Wasn’t it going to a booth this year?

The other question you need to ask is… after you can tell the call, can you also spot the ball and the clock in 10-15 seconds?

      • walter_in_fallschurch

i think all that clock and balls stuff can be figured out much quicker than it is.

        • SCamp

Depends on the situation… what if the guy caught the ball (supposedly) and then runs another 20 yards, blah blah blah. Then it gets challenged. IF the ball ends up hitting the ground then you have to definitively spot where and when the ball hit the ground. Not defending the process because it’s maddening… but I can see where it’s more complicated than one might think on the surface.

          • walter_in_fallschurch

there are some complex cases that might, possibly, maybe require a full 30 seconds. most don’t, imo. and with the gang in ny approach different people could be watching for different things, just like different refs look for different things during a play.

          • SCamp

Also, I’m not an AV guy but it must take a while to be able to isolate the correct shots and make them manipulative by the ref so he can get these three aspects correct.

  • TWISI

Not sure if this guy has been mentioned; a sleeper rb.

Tennessee junior RB John Kelly will declare for the 2018 NFL Draft.

This is an unfortunate turn of events for new Vols HC Jeremy Pruitt. We’d heard Kelly was leaning towards declaring earlier in the campaign, though we thought he might have a change of heart due to a misdemeanor marijuana possession citation in October and a poor second half as Tennessee’s offense cratered amid all the Butch Jones drama. The 5-foot-9, 212-pound Kelly isn’t a burner, which will hurt his draft positioning, but he is extremely tough and versatile. Kelly was a broken tackle machine at Tennessee who provided value in the passing game. He finished with 778 yards rushing and nine touchdowns and a 37-299-0 receiving line in 2017 after stepping into the RB1 role. Kelly’s stock is heavily dependent on his testing numbers and interviews. Amid a deep RB class, he looks like a Day 3 pick that could potentially slip out of the draft altogether if his tests are poor

    • SCamp

Seems like we have guys like that…

      • TWISI

I think his vision is better. I’ve seen him on tv a couple of times and he makes really good reads

So Keith is no longer even on Sports anymore he’s the Deputy Editor, General Assignment desk at The Washington Post

  • Rick Deez

Bruce Allen may be an ass…but he’s a shrewd businessman and won’t be bullied by Kirk or his agent.

    • Hope-18

Well I don’t agree with the “bully” comment. You admire Bruce for being a “shrewd businessman” but not the player who beat him at his own game. Got ya.

      • TWISI

The agent beat him. He steered Kirk correctly

        • Lbsand

Indeed, they’ve played it beautifully. And it’s hard to imagine they’ll misstep now.

          • Big Buck64

Yes. His agent is in a negotiating heaven . Almost unprecedented territory .

    • TWISI

I’ve said it before, Kirk’s agent is trying to change the way contracts are done for top players. Revis started the trend of playing on guaranteed $$ for the length of the contract, and I believe this is the template this agent is using. It wouldn’t surprise me if Kirk sign a mid-term deal with the majority of it guaranteed.

    • kon, for now

I’d start with…’Well Mike, your client is $44 million richer and we’ve got nothing to show for it. Tell you what though, if you kiss my ass, I’ll buy him a cake that says good luck in Cleveland’

      • Hope-18

And Cousins will say “Thank you very much, I really appreciate all your support. It’s been an honor to have been your QB the last 3 years. I wish nothing but the best for you”.

        • kon, for now

You’re talking about the same guy that shoved a ref at a charity ball game.

  • Hope-18

I think the Redskins should offer Cousins whatever they think he’s worth and let the cards fall where they may. I think this is what BA will do. He’s a CAP and contracts guy in the end.

    • TWISI

I think so too. He’ll likely leave because of it

    • Big Buck64

He’s gonna turn it down .

      • Zig-Zag_BC

        Fuck him then.

      • Hope-18

That’s definitely possible but the Redskins have to sleep in the bed they made. If they don’t think Cousins is worth what others will pay him, then they just have to move on.

        • Big Buck64

They do . I don’t think KC will sign any LTD with them , unless it was ridiculous. I don’t think he wants to be there . If that’s indeed the case , there’s nothing they can do .

          • Big Buck64

            I don’t blame him.

  • TWISI

Listened to Cooley this morning. He said that the Skins aren’t will to go 7% above Stafford’s deal (projected cap increase), then they should let Kirk go. I previously suggested that the team should use the transition tag, but have since learned the team would be assed out if they didn’t match the offer. Let him go into free agency…he may just come back

    • Big Buck64

what do you mean “assed out ” ? How is it any different than just moving on

      • TWISI

Draft pick if they let him hit free agency

Apparently Frosted Flakes is to generic of a term to be trademarked so General Mills said Fuck it.

Still got your Cereal Pants on? Because General Mills also dropped new Lucky Charms Frosted Flakes all over our faces today. The cereal combines Lucky Charm marshmallows with frosted corn flakes and a hint of tiger’s blood, because they absolutely EVISCERATED Tony the Tiger when they made this cereal. Apparently “Frosted Flakes” is too generic a term to be trademarked. 😅 General Mills even went with a blue box and white font, just like Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes. It really does seem like a big bowl of 🖕 aimed at Kellogg’s, but what do I know? (Nothing.)

San Fran has some shit weather

True. But Hayward doesn’t – except it’s gotten a lot hotter around here in the summertime than it was back when the homes were built without AC.

Guys, talk about what you want to talk about, including race. That’s fine. But when it starts getting ugly, it’s going to come to a screeching halt. I haven’t seen that in the past few comments, but pls don’t let it get to that point. Racial slurs are one of the very, very few things – maybe the only thing – that won’t fly here.

Trump: Ban all Muslims from entering the country!

Constitution: You can’t do that, sir, we guarantee freedom of religion. It’s one of the founding principles.

Trump: Fine. How about banning brown people countries?

    • SCamp

Take that shit back to the rag homie

      • Kelly

“A person briefed on the meeting told CNN that Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin was running through a proposal listing countries that would be covered by TPS protections in exchange for ending the visa lottery. The person said when Durbin got to Haiti, Trump began to ask why we want people from Haiti in the US and asked why we want more Africans.

The President then said, according to this person, why do we want all these people from “shithole countries” coming here — and added that the US should get more people from countries like Norway.”

I like you, Scamp. But sometimes I’m gonna say things you don’t like. It’s okay.

        • SCamp

I don’t mind people saying things I don’t like. I guess I was just jaded hoping this could be a brave, new blog… without the shackles of politics and idiocy…

but insanity is conversing with the same bunch of douche bags and expecting different results. But I will refrain… 😉

          • Kelly

Unless we’re gonna talk about Deuce Gruden until there’s a new post, other things will find their way in here. As long as people don’t shit on each other for having different beliefs or philosophies, things should be fine.

You and Steve are two of my favorite people I’ve met through Redskins blogs, and I hardly agree with either of you on anything. It can be done!

          • SCamp

I choose to refrain from politics, race and religion here. Like I said yesterday, my self imposed rules are, in no way, intended to guide anyone else in their conversational endeavors.

          are funny from you.

          • SCamp

Ok Walter… whatever you say homie

  • Rick Deez

I don’t want an interview “just for the experience”. I want a “job”.

    • Kelly

Big picture: Forcing teams to interview minority candidates results in more minority candidates getting their name in the discussion of who would make a good head coach. There are now 8 minority HCs in the NFL. As you say, the rule is not necessarily great for the minority candidate being interviewed for a job that is already someone else’s, but in the long term, it is having the desired effect of getting minorities into head coach roles.

    • Lbsand

You’ve never applied for a position for the experience of the process, even though you knew you weren’t likely to be a top candidate? I did a couple of time, was VERY helpful down the road. One, I was fortunate to make a good impression and two, it helped me prepare.

      • No Punt Intended

Great point and I recommend that as well. Going on in interview for a gig you are pretty sure you wont get is great practice whereas you will become comfortable with the process, hear a lot of the same questions and be in position to speak to those and other questions with greater ease, etc. Going on an interview is never a bad idea because smart organizations always have a spot for a great hire, even if it’s not the position you initially came in to interview for.

      • Rick Deez

        No, I haven’t.

        • Kelly

          I haven’t either.

  • Rick Deez

Yes, there are shit-hole countries, but where it’s a racist statement is that he singled out African and Caribbean countries…essentially countries with black people. There are shit-hole countries all over the world with people of ALL colors. Just like he singled out NFL players, who happen to be mostly black as “sons of bitches”.

    • No Punt Intended

That’s fine Rick. You and many here are predisposed to wanting to point out how racist the POTUS is. Go for it broseph. I gotta say though, you are probably just putting undue stress on yourself. You should smoke a bowl.

      • Rick Deez

I call it like I see it bruh. Not sure why people cannot and will not believe that it’s possible. He gets a pass. “Teflon Don”.

        • No Punt Intended

Some take the guy literally and don’t take him seriously.

Others take him seriously, just not literally.

I’d fall into the latter and you’d be more of the former.

          • Rick Deez

I believe in the power of words. He speaks what he thinks. Yes, I am the former. Maya Angelou had a famous quote: “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time”.

          • No Punt Intended

Cool. So when you meet Trump, let me know what he showed you in terms of an actual, real-life first impression.

          • Rick Deez

Hope I never do….but if I did I’d respect the position

    • Kelly

There is a problem larger than the fact that our president is racist… that problem is that roughly 35% of the country doesn’t seem to be bothered by it.

      • Rick Deez

        BINGO! ^^^ …and that’s a problem.

  • Rick Deez

Racism is so very much alive in this country.

    • Squinns

      Yes, it is.

    • Flounder

So it’s racist for the raiders to hire Jon Gruen as there coach?

      • Rick Deez

        I’m talking about Trump’s comments.

        • Flounder

Well he is a pathetic piece of shit.

        • No Punt Intended

They are shit hole countries, though. So, yeah. Let’s focus on Americans. Why don’t we do that? Foreign folk are welcome here but we have a process. Right?

  • Rick Deez

The last thing I want is an interview knowing good and well you’re not going to hire me. That’s more insulting than passing me over.

    • Flounder

Thats what happens when you have a rule like this, owners are going to hire who they want.

      • Kelly

Once again, though, the Rooney Rule is less about that specific hiring instance, and more about making sure minority candidates are getting looked at in general.

        Also, it’s working.

        • Flounder

Agreed bur you can;t get mad when this happens because it’s going to happen.

          • Kelly

I don’t think anyone’s mad. If the Raiders didn’t follow the process, though, there will be consequences… fine of some sort.

          • Flounder

They did follow the process they interviewed two minority candidates, even if they were token interviews.

          • Kelly

The process is more complicated than “interview a candidate”, or it could be handed out on a business card.

There’s a communication process where they need to show their work. It came up in the discussions when we hired Shanahan.

          • Flounder

Actually no its not you just need to interview a minority candidate.

    • Squinns

I think many see that the advantage is the actual interview experience. There is some benefit to that, so that when their real opportunity comes up, they are better prepared.

    • No Punt Intended

Ah, the “ceremonial nod”. Best interview you can participate in if you really believe you earned the gig. But yeah, I could see how that might make you feel.

  • No Punt Intended

I really Hope Jake66 gets the call this year. I get that there are so many players worthy of the HOF who are not in……but screw them. PUT JAKE IN THE HALL!

And while you are at it, the fact that Brian Mitchell is not even afforded consideration makes me want to go punch a child.

    • King Kerry

Jacoby and Jerry Smith are two serious oversights.

      • No Punt Intended

Jerry Smith. Jesus how could I leave him out? Smith will get in at some point. The NFL will make that “happen” so they can say, “See what kind of lig we are?” And even if that’s what it takes, fine. I just hope he gets the honor he deserves.

    • Steve Thomas

We’ve had Jacoby on the show twice, and talked to him off the air. He won’t say it publicly, but he really wants to get in. Unfortunately, he’s probably going to split the vote with Tony Boselli again this year, which will put him in the senior committee.

  • Different_Cat

In a bipartisan meeting on immigration policy, Trump asked why he should accept immigrants from “shit hole” countries like Haiti and those in Africa, rather than nice immigrants from Norway.

so D_C why do you think Ronnie Harrison is a Day 1 pick?

he struggles in coverage against better caliber receivers
he’s not going to play FS in the NFL, he’s going to be a SS
he’s going to be a good player maybe not Collins good
I see him going in the 34-40 range

    • Different_Cat

That was just based on where I’ve seen others rank him, and some mock drafts. Matt Miller from Bleacher has him as his 12th or 13th best player overall. Some mocks have him going late first and others in the 2nd. Can’t say I’ve spent much time studying him myself.

      • noonefromtampa

        ok gotcha

I would not mind him as our 2nd round pick

      • Lbsand

I don’t hate him, but I have no respect for him. Which is probably worse all things considered.

        • Kelly

I hated Dick Cheney. I agree with Sand – I don’t hate Trump, he’s just not presidential material. Why the GOP thought he was qualified to run on their ticket remains a mystery to me.

          • Lbsand

            Cheney should be in prison.

          • No Punt Intended

Well, he kept winning? And he ran through 16 qualified GOP candidates like a hot knife through butter.

            That’s why.

          • Kelly

For what it’s worth, I don’t think the Dems should have let Bernie run on their ticket, either. Neither Bernie nor Donald had much in common with the parties they ran for.

    • Zig-Zag_BC

I’ve yet to double dip, unless likes count.

  • Flounder

    Sorry here is the story.

Raiders interviewed Tee Martin and Bobby Johnson to comply with Rooney Rule

As if it wasn’t clear that the Raiders had no regard or serious interest in the Rooney Rule, the candidates they interviewed so they could rubber stamp the Jon Gruden hiring made it apparent.

General Manager Reggie McKenzie said during Gruden’s introductory press conference that he interviewed tight ends coach Bobby Johnson and Southern Cal offensive coordinator Tee Martin to comply with the league’s rule that mandates minority candidates for head coaching jobs.

    • King Kerry

Fritz Pollard Alliance, and BSPN-type talking heads are going to bitch and moan about it anyway.

      • Rick Deez

Why is it bitching and moaning? They just want to make sure the process was followed?

        • Steve Thomas

The Pollard Alliance actually does a pretty good job with this.

        • King Kerry

Martin and Johnson got interviewed before Gruden was hired. end of story. yet the Alliance wants an investigation, and several articles about how the Raiders skirted the process have been put out, when the Raiders didn’t skirt the process.

          • Kelly

I believe there is a process that is supposed to be followed, which includes notifying the alliance ahead of time, not telling them afterward “Oh… yeah, we interviewed these guys, ask them.”

          • Squinns

I think the problem is that any time a team knows who they want to hire, they have to interview minority candidates to comply with the Rooney Rule. Those interviews are never real and I suspect both sides know this. That will always be a sham in that sense; they are meaningless in that the candaidate is only being interviewed to comply with the rule because the team already knows who it is going to hire. And, there’s nothing that can be done about that because as with many employers when you are making a change, many time you already know who you take that position.

However, the minority candidates do get the interview experience which can help them later when they are in fact a legit candidate for the position.

NFL has no rule or policy regarding hiring a new coach before firing the old one

so if you want to have 3 head coaches go right ahead

    • Steve Thomas

Yes but actually reaching an agreement with one could run afoul of the Rooney Rule, which the Raiders essentially skirted in this instance.

      • noonefromtampa

it is truly a rule or more of a guideline?

is the NFL going to penalize Oakland for the hire?

        • Kelly

It’s a rule, but there has been a lot of grey area around what processes do or don’t comply with the rule since it’s inception.

      • Squinns

Did Oakland interview any minority candidates for the HC position (even if they never had any intention of actually considering the candidates, which is what most teams are doing when they know who they want to hire but have to comply with the Rooney Rule)?

        • Flounder

          They said they interviewed two.

I love how people act like the redskins are the only team with these type issues.

PITTSBURGH — At age 25 and fresh off a first-team All-Pro season, Le’Veon Bell is putting his own football future in question.

The Pittsburgh Steelers running back told ESPN that he’s prepared to sit out a season, or even retire, if franchise tagged for the second consecutive year.

“I hope it doesn’t come to that, but I would definitely consider it,” he said before Thursday’s practice.

Bell played on a $12.1 million franchise tag in 2017, and that number is projected to increase to around $14.5 million for next season. Teams can tag a player between Feb. 20 and March 6, after which they would have until July 16 at 4 p.m. ET to work out a long-term contract.

“Just get the numbers straight, exactly where we want them. I’m not going to settle for anything. I know what I do and what I bring to the table. I’m not going out here getting the ball 400 times if I’m not getting what I feel I’m valued at.”

    Le’Veon Bell

    • Kelly

Bell doesn’t sound as eager as Kirk to go year to year with massive paychecks but no guaranteed future.

    • Steve Thomas

This is, of course, a steaming pile of hot garbage. I don’t think even Bell himself believes that he’s going to turn down $14.5M because he’s insulted that it’s only for 1 year.

What questions would you ask DeMaurice Smith?

    1. Do you think there is a comprise set of things that the players would agree to in order to have a 17 game season such as fewer preseason games, additional bye week, expanded roster?
F/U if positive answer: Are there thing the players would not compromise on?
F/U if negative answer: Don’t you think that would expand the cap putting more money in players pockets?

    2. How do you respond to the coaches and some players who say the limits on session with coaches has limited player development?
F/U Would there be some flexibility on say having more non-contact, film sessions?

have a few more, but I don’t want Alex or Steve to steal all my best stuff (j/k guys)

        • Zig-Zag_BC

          “backfield mate”? Really?

        • noonefromtampa

Ronnie is not going round 1

we’ve had issues with Youtube getting blocked

    • etrod

We block streaming sites for most employees of for nothing eye than to preserve bandwidth

    • alex35332

Yes in the live AV world I’ve run into this problem often. IT loves to block youtube and I’d normally understand, but I always have to push for exemptions on whatever PC’s we are using for the AV work.

you may get listed as a sports/entertainment site which some companies elect to block for productivity purposes

WaPo gets a whitelist pass because it’s a “news” site

NFL: There’s no rule or policy preventing a team from striking deal with new coach before firing current one

    • Squinns

      And there shouldn’t be.

        Shouldn’t be.
But it’s a shitty thing to do…. I mean we did it to Zorn with Shanny, that’s how shitty it is to do that to a guy, it’s Drunk Dan Snyder level dickholeness.

        • Flounder

Zorn should have never been a coach in the first place and he helped get Vinny fired. Zorn ws gone no matter who we hired.

As a fan of sports, we all have a few games in life that we were at where you can feel that kind of in the moment, that weird energy that you get when 50,000 people are all going nuts. I know I felt it only once when I went to Strasburgs first game at Nats park.

    • Steve Thomas

Good stuff from Casserly. Brown has faults as a player, but he’s without a doubt a must re-sign free agents.

      • Rick Deez

I agree, but I’d like to upgrade Foster.

        • btg

I think foster is better than people give him credit for

      • alex35332

I mean, we all kinda deserve it.

    • Zig-Zag_BC

I took my family up to the zoo a few years back, parked in East Falls Church and rode in, I didn’t miss it one bit. Got a kick outta my wife and daughter’s reaction to the escalator at metro center, though.

      • alex35332

Reaction? What, had it turned to stairs?

        • Zig-Zag_BC

No, just wonderment. My wife is a country girl. My daughter loved it. Biggest escalator my wife had ever seen before that was probably in the mall.

          • alex35332

Ah. Yes I’ve told a similar story once or twice, my wife had a friend of hers visit from the Texas panhandle, woman was in her 30’s had never used an escalator, needed a minute to figure it out.

          • Zig-Zag_BC

Yeah, she understood the mechanics, they have them in JC Penny’s and whatnot. I was proud of my daughter, she functioned fine in the city, no hangups with culture shock. She has a great mind.

          • alex35332

I forget how hard the culture shock is for some people. Only time I ever come close is visiting relatives in the burbs.

          • Zig-Zag_BC

Yeah, my wife is/was as they say “country as fuck”. I’ve turned her on to a lot of stuff she never had a chance to experience. I’ve been all over this country, one side to the other and all points between, I love people, culture, that sort of thing.

          • alex35332

was she a one stater? My best friend was living in Oklahoma and dated a girl who never had left the state. Literally spent the first 20 years of her life never even leaving the panhandle, the moved to OKC. But that’s it.

          • Zig-Zag_BC

Pretty much, lived in Atlanta as a child (she’s damn sure a peach), out here the rest. My savior, or, exactly what I needed to ground myself, saved me from the “lost highway” so to speak.

          • Kelly

My wife is afraid of escalators, but loves zoos. This should be fun.

          • Zig-Zag_BC

Don’t tell her about it, sssshhhhhh! You’ll have a ball.

          • alex35332

She doesn’t have to use the escalator to get there, just if you take the metro. With the little baby I’d think driving to the Zoo is easier.

  • alex35332

    • Different_Cat

I think most teams do, because they start out with a favorite. In a way it’s very insulting to black candidates because the NFL forces teams to treat them like token blacks.

    • Squinns

Most employers have a top target in mind when they set out to fill a position. That’s a reality. Do you think the Skins were really after anyone but Jay Gruden?

The Rooney Rule gives candidates to at least the oportunity get interview experience for when a realistic opportunity presents itself. And that’s all they would have gotten from Raiders as they already knew Jon Gruden was their man.

        • alex35332

No that happened naturally as people got older and too important like Danny Rouhier.

          • Back to the good ol daysBruce

La confora and Redskins announcer Larry?

          • alex35332

Yes just before Jason left the post he got in a pissing contest with Larry Michael. Jason had called the league offices asking if some things Vinny said on his radio show would be violations of the whole, don’t talk about other teams players rules. The Skins used that as an opportunity to finally go after Jason, there were years of bad blood between the front office and him. Saying he was trying to get the team in trouble on purpose. So Larry attacked Jason on his TV show for 3 days in a row. It was like an old DJ war.

if you want more minority head coaches then establish a training program at the league level and have some league paid intern position(s) on each NFL team
    ——————
I also think it would be beneficial to allow qualified minority candidates legitimate opportunities to become NFL GMs. I guarantee they would ensure qualified minority HC candidates at least get a shot. And not just because they may be black. They know a guy is equally qualified and deserves an interview. Period.

    • noonefromtampa

I think they have some sort of FO program already
and they have a limited program for coaches during training camp
      need to expand them

    • Flounder

Owners are going to hire who they want.

    • etrod

I think they already have that. Chris Samuels did it

    Alex,

In reference to the need to add another game, what I’d like to see instead would be to reduce preseason games to two, making the other two, formerly preseason games, regular season ones.

    • Back to the good ol daysBruce

I agree. I just think the safety issue alone would prevent lengthening the season and probably advocate removing 1-2 pre-season games.

      • SCamp

I think the preseason games are essential to reducing injuries.

        • HTTRsince65

how so? I think you must be kidding, and I fell for it.

          • alex35332

There’s an debate that pre-season gets guys into “game shape” now. Especially because practices are so limited in terms of hitting.

        • SCamp

Not kidding… these slackened practices, no 2 a days, light off seasons… injuries are up. Reason? These guys aren’t fully ready or conditioned for the full impact of the season.

          • HTTRsince65

those issues I agree with but every year we lose guys to ‘meaningless’ preseason games. I say make them count

          • alex35332

There is some truth to that for sure. But I think if you planned out the bigger picture stuff, allow for more physical practices, more organized scrimmages like some teams do, add in a developmental league to help groom backups and stuff. You could improve safety/health and reduce pre-season games.

          • SCamp

I don’t disagree… but you better negotiate that shit.

    • etrod

They should add a second bye week and put it before each teams Thursday game.

      • alex35332

My thinking is more that if you want to keep having games in “neutral sites” it’s BS that fans from 1 team have to give up a home game every year, that’s why an odd number would make so much sense.

The Bears dipped into the collegiate ranks to hire offensive line coach Harry Hiestand and they are doing the same at offensive coordinator.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Bears have hired former University of Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich the offensive coaching staff for Matt Nagy.

Helfrich was the offensive coordinator of the Ducks from 2009-2012 and moved into the head coaching spot after Chip Kelly left for the Eagles. He won 33 games in his first three seasons and went to a national title game before being fired after going 4-8 during the 2016 season.

Those Oregon offenses were known for being fast-paced and Nagy comes from running a Chiefs offense that featured a fair amount of the spread formations Helfrich favored in Eugene matched with West Coast concepts, so it seems a fair bet that the Bears are going to have Mitch Trubisky running an offense that melds those things in 2018.

Keep em’…he lives with em’ or dies with em’.

      • Flounder

        Sounds about right

    • SCamp

He can’t be so blind that he can’t see certain coaches need to go. Leave well enough alone and see if he figures it out on his own

    • noonefromtampa

if Jay keeps all his coaches and we lose 1-2 games because of ST gaffs
then it’s all on him and he deserves what he gets

  • Different_Cat

We interviewed every black former head coach who has been in the broadcast booth for at least 10 yrs.
    -Raiders Attorney

  • noonefromtampa

if you want more minority head coaches then establish a training program at the league level and have some league paid intern position(s) on each NFL team

Training program for various position like what does it take to be
    a QC assistant
    a position coach
    a coordinator
    a head coach
hire some former league coaches to develop and lead those

also have a professional development component
    public speaking
    dealing with the press
    dealing with players
    etc.

that’s the best way to increase the minority ranks

    • Flounder

That would be better then the Rooney rule.

  • alex35332

      good

    • Flounder

      How about Mexico?

      • alex35332

        Or Toronto?
I really think that they need to add a 17th game to the season and give every team 1 international game or neutral game. A head to head between the AFC & NFC teams that finished in whatever ranking they had last season. Means you always get a Superbowl rematch the next year which everyone loves. Have games in the UK, Mexico, Canada, Asia/Australia, mainland Europe, maybe a few in US cities with out teams.

    • Zig-Zag_BC

      NK?

    • Zig-Zag_BC

So, Kirk may lose to the Eagles in London?

  • etrod

The worst part of the Raiders situation is that Gruden and Del Rio have the same agent. The agent is the real dick bag here.

    • Flounder

What else could he have done?

      • etrod

It was a tough position to be on, for sure but he did his client a disservice. Gotta at least give Jack a heads up or try to mediate the situation somehow

        • Flounder

That would be unethical towards Gruden.

      • HTTRsince65

Maybe he should have recused himself. lol

        • Flounder

Yeah and lose that money, not happening.

          • HTTRsince65

            again, just a joke….

          • etrod

He may have lost money on the long run because who is going to want him as their agent after he screwed his client?

          • Flounder

I don’t think he screwed him there was really nothing he could do we will see if Del Rio fires him or not.

  • noonefromtampa

organizations (government, company, etc.) makes rules
people find ways to get around the rules to accomplish things

    • Flounder

      This rule is dumb.

      • noonefromtampa

the more of a road block a rule is, the more likely it is someone goes around it

        • Flounder

Yeah sorry but your not going to tell Billionares who they should and shouldn’t hire.

    • SCamp

      So No Rules!!!

      • HTTRsince65

Agreed! While we’re at it, lets cut Government in half! As a start! Incredibly wasteful…. We will know who works for the Government by how many or few click on the up arrow… lmao

    • Different_Cat

Has any team ever been punished for violating that rule?

      • etrod

I think Detroit was when they hired Marriucci

    • Flounder

Teams are going to hire who they want no matter the race so making them do fake interviews is stupid.

      • Kelly

You gotta look at this a level deeper, my friend. There are now 8 minority HCs in the NFL, which is partly because the Rooney Rule has forced teams to identify minority candidates through the interview process.

Yes, they end up hiring who they wanted anyway, but they also end up giving the other 31 teams the name of a minority coach to think about when it comes time for them to look at who they want coaching.

    • Flounder

They did interview two minority candidates even though they never really had a shot at the job.

  • Zig-Zag_BC

If he’d have won a few playoff games, this whole “pave the way for guaranteed years” thing would have had more leverage, not that any amount of leverage would bring something like that to fruition.

  • HTTRsince65

Paulsen then asked whether Cousins has talked much with McCloughan since his departure from the team nearly a year ago.

“Not really,” Cousins said. “I mean, not a long, drawn-out conversation. He called me last winter just to let me know that he was moving on, and then I think he texted me when Cooper was born, and maybe one or two other times, just in a congratulatory sense. I’ve always respected him. I’ve always felt good about Scot, and enjoyed working alongside him, and enjoyed the experience he drew on, being around guys like Brett Favre and Alex Smith and Russell Wilson. And I felt like he was a football guy, who knew football guys.”

McCloughan, for what it’s worth, has admitted that the team didn’t handle the Cousins situation correctly.

“The guy is really intelligent, the guy is a solid, solid quarterback,” McCloughan said last summer. “You know, we kind of messed up in Washington not getting him done earlier, from the standpoint of the contract.”

    • Flounder

Yeah and he was part of the mess up.

      • HTTRsince65

Blame can be assigned to numerous parties tbf. Still, if we end up searching for our next franchise qb…….well i just don’t think they’re easy to find.

        • Flounder

I still don’t think we found him, sorry just because Kikr is better than what we have had doesn’t make him a franchise guy.

          • HTTRsince65

I’d love to have the next Brees, or Rodgers, etc…but KC, with enough talent, can get us there imo.

    • Different_Cat

“And being a non-drinker, I kinda got a kick out of the contact high I got from his breath.”

  • HTTRsince65

    Happy Friday eve!

Sounds like Kirk is a little miffed that Gruden said that he plays great…at times

  • Flounder

    Interesting hire.

It was such a mess, they had an agreement with Jon Gruden before firing Jack Del Rio. They did that guy dirty.
    _________________________

    1. This shit happens all the time. All the time. Many organizations have the replacement in line before firing the current guy. This is far from doing someone dirty.

    2. Just because they had Jon Gruden signed up before they fired Del Rio, doesn’t necessarily mean that they didn’t follow the Rooney rule. All they had to do was interview some minority candidates. The current person have to be canned before you conduct those interviews. They could have conducted those interviews before Del Rio was fired as well.

    3. Do we really think a professional organization would not comply? Do you really think they aren’t aware of the Rooney rule?

    4. Most organizations know who they are going to hire at the end. The Rooney Rule is about process. It is intended to at least give real minority candidates an opportunity to interview, expereince; it doesn’t mean that they have to be realistic candidates, but they must be given a legitimate shot to at least interview. Many times it is a rehearsal for the next coaching job at which they have a greater shot, giving them experience in the interview process to hopefully perform well when their opportunity arises.

    • Flounder

I think you should also look at the history of the organization and the Raiders have been very progressive in the hiring of minorities.

  • walter_in_fallschurch

          • HTTRsince65

            It was a joke.

          • alex35332

Eh, I just don’t think a team that doesn’t win it’s conference should ever get in the playoffs.

  • Big Buck64

The saga continues . One of these days , it will be resolved .

    • smokey

      Feb 20th?

    • Flounder

I’m thinking that will be this year I doubt they let this play out any longer.

      • SCamp

        I sure hope so

        • Flounder

Me to even if it means he is gone and all we get is a 3rd round compensatory pick.

          • SCamp

There’s no guarantee we get any comp pick…

          • Flounder

True that depends on what we do in FA.

    • walter_in_fallschurch

it’s got to be hurting jersey sales. who wants to buy a $100 (or whatever) jersey for a guy who’s on a 1-year deal?

      • smokey

I confronted that exact situation in 2017…went with a Sherrif jersey instead since he’ll be around a while.

      • Flounder

That makes no difference considering Dan gets the same amount for the sale of a Cam Newton jersey as he gets for a sale of a Cousins jersey.

        • walter_in_fallschurch

i understand they share jersey money. still, it reflects local levels of commitment. no one really wants to go “all in” on cousins, cause he’s just been on one year deals.

  • Flounder

I’m not saying there is anything wrong with the way Kirk has played this, I mean give him credit for using the system to his advantage.

  • Flounder

I would also say that a QB and coach don’t have to be lovers either, they just need to respect each other and work together.

    • alex35332

Very true. Some of the most successful relationships in football IMO are when key guys respect each other but butt heads. Think of Joe and Bobby back in the day.

  • Kelly

Gruden and KC both seem like genuinely good dudes who just want to win football games. I really hope the money situation doesn’t sour shit.

    • Flounder

It already has because Kirk has never wanted to negotiate with us and wont this off season either he wants to be a FA because that is how you make the most money.

      • Kelly

Kirk is listening to his agent.

        • Flounder

Yes and sometimes that works out sometimes not.

        • Big Buck64

You gotta figure , for an agent , this is like heaven . He probably will never have it any better .

  • alex35332

The rumor stuff with Jay is silly. At no point did Gruden say anything about Kirk in his comments, it was all about the situation and that he just wants stability at QB. Every coach wants and deserves that so the team can build around the most key position.

    • Flounder

What he said was the truth but I think some took it as a knock on Kirks play, he also said he thinks Kirks situation is all about the money and that is also correct.

    • Big Buck64

IDK , KC said publicly he was a little surprised about Gruden’s comments . I sensed there might be a little something there

      • Flounder

Yeah there was more to it than posturing.

  • C. Dub.

I didn’t give your site a chance,alex35332,but I was wrong! You guys have done a great job of getting up and running and the comment section is MUCH better than one at that other hamster gathering place!

    —————-
What is Kirk guilty of? As far as I can see, he’s playing as best he can, and looking for the best deal he can get.

    • Flounder

His agent was trying to make him out to be a victim when what he really wants is the most money possible and that is fine but admit it don’t act like you have been treated bad.

      • Different_Cat

To be fair, he hasn’t ever come out and said he’s been treated unfairly. Dude has a bit of passive aggressiveness to him, but he always says the right things.

        • Flounder

His agent and family have said things, and either he is behind that or should control them.

          • Kelly

Or he should concentrate on game film and preparing his mind and body for football, which is what I’d prefer he be doing.

          • Flounder

            He isn’t doing that now

      • Kelly

His agents job is to get him the most money possible. I agree that agents in general (and probably Kirk’s, I haven’t paid attention to him) tend to get overly melodramatic when making their cases.

  • noonefromtampa

and by FO leak we mean Bruce Allen

    • Flounder

Shanny and Scot were leaking plenty of stuff.

  • alex35332

I’m going back and forth with Rick Snider about GMU not having a football team. Am I wrong that it’s weird their Sports department is run by 2 ex redskins players and yet they have 0 interest in adding football program.

    • noonefromtampa

at least start at Div III and see what happens interest-wise
as a GMU grad I would for the school to have a football team

    • Flounder

Do they have a stadium and the training facilities to have a team?

      • alex35332

They have a soccer stadium that holds 5K. I know they have a general weigh room athletic facilities on campus. That’s got to be at least enough to start a Division 3 program.

        • Flounder

Football programs can be very expensive with all the equipment needed.

          • alex35332

I know it’s not cheap. All the sleds, equipment, you are talking about at least a few million to start one up.

          • walter_in_fallschurch

this is why soccer is so popular world-wide.

      • Zig-Zag_BC

Before we get too wrapped up in the he-said-she-said of the KC negotiations, remember that *several* former players and coaches have made it known that the Redskins FO likes to leak information to the press.

    • Flounder

Yeah Kirks agent likes to leak things to the press also.

      • Zig-Zag_BC

        Insert NPI Kowicipee joke

      • Kelly

Could be, I haven’t been following Kirks agent for 40 years.

        • Flounder

Most of the things leaked have been to Kirks benefit.

          • Kelly

Kirk’s benefitted primarily from the team not having another option at QB. All he’s had to do is wait.

          • Flounder

Which is why the Fans think he is Mr. innocent in all this, which is very wrong.

      • Flounder

Jay stuff wasn’t leaked he said it in public.

        • Kelly

I don’t know what the Jay stuff is yet, just hearing CSN talking about there being tension, and immediately my mind went back to all the drama bullshit we’ve been through in the last 10 years

          • Big Buck64

Gruden’s frustrations boiling to the surface would be my guess .

          • walter_in_fallschurch

he, like all of us, want to know who the team’s qb is.

          • Big Buck64

Oh yeah , he’s in a helluva bad spot , and it seems to never end.

          • Flounder

      • Big Buck64

        I saw it ,

State department contracting is a small community as long as your liked you can work here forever, even if that means switching contracts or contract companies.

    • noonefromtampa

that happens a lot with State, DOD, HLS
see whole contracts move from one company to another the new company hired about 80-90% of the people from the prior company

      • alex35332

It’s true in every government agency I’ve dealt with. It’s why the “small government” talk in the 80’s and 90’s was such BS. They just moved the work force to the more expensive contractor positions.

      LOL you know I’m in

      • Kelly

        Many memories.
        My favorite memory?
        The Haiku Tuesdays.

        • Flounder

          Yeah those were good.

    • noonefromtampa

is Topless Tuesday coming back too?
      what about Haiku?

      • noonefromtampa

        well technically I think
        Haiku was Wednesday
        Theater Thursday
        Fact Free Friday (FFF)

        • Kelly

Haiku was Wednesday? I’ve got it all backward now.

          • alex35332

I am 99% sure it was Haiku Tuesday.

    • alex35332

And I know, technically we did Haiku Tuesday, Movie Quote Wednesday, and fact free Friday, I think those were the order. but I didn’t think of it till after I did the show, and that seemed like it would be to late. So why not move things around a bit.
      And as we all know,
      haikus were never my thing,
      because spelling is hard

Wait if it was Theater Thursday than we can just make it Movie Quote Thursday. Which works great!

    This is a thing.
    http://www.newsguild.org/me

    _______________

“Management also proposed to cut severance pay by up to almost 80 percent, and to make severance pay conditional on workers surrendering their legal right to sue the Post or collect monetary relief if a government agency finds the dismissal was improper. “That should be illegal,” declared David DeJesus, local secretary-treasurer and the Washington Post unit co-chair. ”
    ________________

I do some employment law. Severance pay is almost never guaranteed and nearly always conditioned on receiving a severance release. Management is just instituting what is completely the norm in the market, but workers don’t want to accept the norm.

    • Kelly

I’ve never received a layoff check that didn’t come with some strings attached.

      • Squinns

EXACTLY! Sounds like the WaPo has some entitlement settlement provisions, which is completely off market.

      • alex35332

The only time I ever had severance it came with that kind of thing.

        • Squinns

          I’ve never seen it without.

    • Zig-Zag_BC

You left off the 1% match proposal.

      • Squinns

My employer only matches 1%. I think that’s low for the market, though.

        • Zig-Zag_BC

It is, especially for organized labor supported by a collective bargaining agreement, which seems to be the driving issue here, “benefits”.

          • Squinns

To be fair, my employment isn’t based on a CBA.

          • Zig-Zag_BC

To be fair, these peeps are. 1% is low, though you may have some other options that equalize. There is a story here, the union is the only outlet (normal in these cases). Why the officer chose severance pay as his “point” is unknown to me.

Re: NPI….as long as he has his hippy lettuce, he’s okay. Not a bad guy. Just, has some bad moments from time to time. Mostly, he’s funny.

Consider timeouts instead of a ban.

    • Kelly

There are a few regs who for some reason make it their mission to talk shit about other people – usually (but not always) Different_Cat. I don’t agree with everything D_C (or anyone else) says, but there are three or four guys who feel like anytime that dude says anything, it’s time to start peeing everywhere.

    • Squinns

NPI can be a solid contributor. But the dude completely goes off the rail whenever anyone disagrees with him (and sometimes he goes off the rails for absolutely no reason).

      • AustinSkin

NPI enjoys being a blog bully. He lives for personal attacks. He is capable of well reasoned, rational comments at times, but he lives for demeaning others, and making it personal.

I’m glad the mods have the cojones to curb this behavior.

        • alex35332

He can post here as long as he doesn’t become a problem, like anyone, if he become a problem let Sean, Steve and I know and we will do something about it.

  • Flounder

      She IS the best!

    • Flounder

Don;t care anymore this place is better anyway.

    • kon, for now

Why’d she stop posting during Skins games?

      She was hoot back then.

      • alex35332

They took her off the Skins, she does a lot on facebook.

      • noonefromtampa

they moved her to the Early Lead and then she was sick for a while (cancer, but she is better now), and she sorted of tapered off

        • noonefromtampa

I actually keep in fairly regular contact with her

        We’ll handle the fun.

Thats more or less our thinking.
That and should we just go ahead and block NPI off the bat or wait till he becomes a problem?

          • Flounder

Haven’t seen him in a few days

          • Lbsand

LOL! I’d give him a fair chance, alex. I enjoyed many of his posts, he brings value until he goes off. Plus, playing ‘npi bingo’ is a fun game.

Good show, guys! I think Kirk is an interesting guy to try to analyze, because he’s super religious. I don’t think he’s going to “lie” about saying things like “something my dad said influenced me”, but I also think he’s well coached by his agents. I’m sure his Dad did say something, but there’s no way that’s the whole story.
