Quick Hit: Coaching Staff Change

The University of Stanford has announced via twitter that Redskins assistant OL coach Kevin Carbeery is moving on from D.C. to California to take a coaching position there. Carbeery had been Bill Callahan’s assistant the past two years.

There were reports that Phil Rauscher, an assistant in Denver, was coming to D.C. to join the Redskins roster as an assistant offensive line coach. The Redskins have not put out press release about these moves, though historically they haven’t done so for lower level coaching changes.  We will give you any more information if we get any.

Here’s the Tweet from Stanford:

Anybody feel like going and getting Coach Janky Spanky?

  • Steve Thomas
  • Zig-Zag_BC

Who’s more likely to find a new home, Landry or Watkins?

    • alex35332

      both will I think

  • Squinns

Problem with Docston is who will he be catching balls from. If KC, I think they learned a lot from eachother over the season and can see a lot of progress between the two of them in 2018. If someone else, who knows.

    • Zig-Zag_BC

There’s soooo much I could do with that – J. Dangle

  • Bad Reputation

I’m at 60% chance that Colt starts in 2018
25% that its another FA QB we sign
    10% we sign Kirk
5% that we draft a guy first round to start.

    • Kelly

That sounds about right to me, though I might go 50/35 on Colt vs FAQB

  • alex35332

So, there was a rumor that the team wanted to give Crowder an extension, but I’m shocked we’ve not heard about anyone else on the team being re-signed or anything at this point. Usually they will try and lock up a few guys now.

    • Squinns

May be trying to figure out what’s going to happen with KC and who may be an upgrade in FA.

    • noonefromtampa

as I said that is the huge decision point for the team with respect to the Cap – Cousins
if they decide to just move on we will see guys being resigned or extended
if it is going down to a tag situation, they will not sign anyone until the last minute possible
exception low cost guys like maybe Grant

    • Kelly

Whatever they do, they gotta find someone else to return punts. The risk w/ Crowder is not worth the reward.

      • Zig-Zag_BC

and the whole “ah shucks” thing when he muffs one.

  • Bad Reputation

We do need another outside guy at WR. We can’t roll with Ryan Grant and Doctson on the outside. Hopefully we’re in the FAWR market.

    • Zig-Zag_BC

I think a vet in FA and a guy like DJ Moore from Maryland in the draft. I’d also take a chance on Robert Foster late in the draft.

    • alex35332

I keep wanting Mike Wallace to be the deep threat we lacked last year. He’s no D Jax but at least would be able to clear space underneath.

  • Bad Reputation

It was essentially Doctson’s rookie year. I think he will be light years better in 2018. Well…..if he has a competent QB delivering the ball.

    • No Punt Intended

You mean in his hands in the back of the end zone to win a game?

      • Lbsand

That was an outstanding pass, and almost an equal catch. I’m in the failed to come down with it camp vs. he dropped it. Semantics I suppose.

        • Zig-Zag_BC

Let’s all fall from 6′ with a football in one hand and see who holds on.

          • Bad Reputation

            haha yes

      • frediefritz

It’s a learning process. If he twists his torso somewhat as he falls, he does not land on the ball, and has a much higher chance of holding on to it.

    • Zig-Zag_BC

I’ma fade bustin’ sonofabitch – Colt

      • alex35332

Colt loves throwing 50/50 balls… so they may match up well together.

        • Zig-Zag_BC

          Yeah.

    • Kelly

I think Doctson has a lot of talent, and made a lot of progress in 2017. I think he could be really good.

  • alex35332

Wow, Jeff Ratcliffe did some fun math on twitter, 25% of Doctson’s targets were in the Redzone last year, league average 6.8%
I think they need to embrace that as his roll. I want to see Doc as a 10+ TD a year player rather than try and make him the featured 1000 yards a season guy.

    • Zig-Zag_BC

Wait, wasn’t that the original plan? God-damned Pryor and Reed!

    • Kelly

Role*. You can do this, man.

      • Zig-Zag_BC

        Raúl?

      • alex35332

I like rolls better. You can cover them in butter.

    • kon, for now

At one point he had, I think, 8 receptions and 5 touchdowns.

      • No Punt Intended

If he is the guy most of us think he can be, he’s gotten that full season under his belt now. Another off-season of preparation within the same offense and I am expecting a breakout season for our former first round pick.

Rooney rule needs to go. Raiders are gonna get in trouble. I heard a radio interview on Dukes show with a guy who works for the Raiders…a reporter….and he said there is so much diversity in that building. It’s a stupid rule and kinda underhanded that teams have to “interview” a minority just to comply with this rule. When said minority has no real shot at the coaching job. It’s a waste of that candidates time…especially with the Raiders job..knowing they were gonna hire Gruden.

    • Kelly

I disagree. The value of the Rooney Rule is that it gets minority candidates into the conversation about coaching roles in NFL circles. Also, it’s working.

I think the game that’s going to shock people is the Philly Atlanta game. Atlanta is a sissy dome team and Philly is a tough place to play. Nobody is giving them a chance. But they can run and play D. Despite Nick Foles, I think they can win.

    • Kelly

I want the Eagles to win. I liked it back in the day when the NFC East was considered a hard division to play in.

      • kon, for now

You are ignoring a comment from Kelly that has these replies

      • Kelly

I get where you guys are coming from, but it’s sad to watch people in Giants, Eagles, Cowboys and Redskins uniforms go out and put such a shitty product on the field. We used to be proud to be from the toughest division. I want something to be proud of in the NFL.

    • No Punt Intended

      I think Atlanta’s defense is under-rated.

      • Zig-Zag_BC

        By whom?

        • No Punt Intended

Well I would imagine that people who keep their finger on the pulse of the league goings-on 12 months a year would not under-rate them but when talking about the Falcons, the conversation is always starting and ending with Matt Ryan, Julio, Sanu, their dynamic RB rotation, their TE and the potential psychological impact of collapsing in the SB last year.

Meantime their defense is killing people.

          • Zig-Zag_BC

So they skipped ‘learn to check pulse” day in NFL sock puppet school. Meh….

      • Bad Reputation

I’m not sure its good enough to go on the road in the playoffs…it’s gonna be cold again…..Philly can run. And they can def shut down a good offense. Julio and his foot…..I’m just saying Philly can def win…some say they lost already.

If there’s one thing Jeff Bezos knows how to do, it’s make money. TI couldn’t have been a profitable thing for WaPo. Amazon will do what it needs to do in order to turn a profit. Communities aren’t really profit centers. You don’t make money off the guys who have been playing chess in the park for 40 years, which is basically what communities like this one are in the media world.

As you might expect, the #Redskins got mixed results from their free agent spending from last offseason—two wins, two losses, and one TBD. https://buff.ly/2qTCnzK

      • alex35332

I mean, I count Pryor alone as 2 losses.

Not sure who said Pryor was going to suck for us after registering a 1000+ yard season with the flaming dog turds they call QB’s in Cleveland. I think everyone here said he would better that; how could he not? Right? Total fucking let down but anyone who says they saw that coming is full of shit.

          • alex35332

Absolutely, I didn’t know if he would be a 1,000 yard guy or not, but no way I thought he would end up this level of bust, all we heard was that he and Kirk were working together 24-7 in the off season to get on the same page and it was going great. Then he face planted like a fat kid running after an ice cream truck.

Alex, don’t know if you saw my posts from last night

got some inside scoop of what is going on at the Post

lots of changes in the Sports area, Liz is the only person on the beat know familiar with Redskins and the blog

sounds like the Amazon folks have come in to “consult” with WaPo web guys and have some analytics that show multiple small blog update do not drive enough traffic to warrant doing them

their “whole blog philosophy” is changing

and Keith has moved to a Deputy Editor position outside of Sports

    • Flounder

      Fuck them then.

    • kon, for now

“analytics that show multiple small blog update do not drive enough traffic to warrant doing them”

vs no update and no traffic.

      Fantastic logic at play there.

    • alex35332

I mean we knew some of it, that they lost Master and Mike in a span of what 3 months? There was a reason they jumped ship that we’re not being told. I am sure that their analytics show them what they want it to show them, and I’m not gonna fault them for it.
I remember when I went in for that job interview a year ago & to me it’s clear the post wants to go away from written reporting to doing way more TV/Podcasting. Which is probably also a factor. And I’m not saying that’s right or wrong btw. Remember how a decade ago people made fun of news outfits for stopping printing papers? Those guys look way smarter now IMO. I think the future of all media is in successfully going to mixed media formats.

I’m glad to see the team is gonna try to go with a “stabilize & develop” mentality. I think most NFL teams are way too quick to say “we’re not getting what we need from this group of players, we need to fire this or that coach.”

There are two ways to get better at coaching… improve your existing coaches or get new coaches. The first method seems largely forgotten about in the NFL. Rather than develop your staff, you cut them and they go develop somewhere else, while you bring in some other team’s guy.

    • Lbsand

We’ll be raving about the coaches as the roster improves. I mean, it’s hard to say the RB’s or whatever suck and blame the RB coach.

    • kon, for now

I know right. It’s good to consistently suck at teams and struggle in the skill positions.

      • kon, for now

        at* teams

    • alex35332

I agree to a point but I think we also need to take into account that some of these guys who may not be producing as coaches, at this point they may have a long track record. That’s my big issue with Randy Jordan, he’s not new to coaching at this point in his career, he’s 47, and in his 15 years now as a running backs coach in college and the nfl he’s yet to really produce any impressive results anywhere, just about every RB he gets his first year production goes down, a 1300 yard back becomes an 1100 yard back. His resume is just not good after all this time.

Chris Thompson is the only success he’s really had with the skins, and while Thompson can be a great weapon, he’s not an every down player, and is only a small part of the equation at RB for any team.

      • Kelly

Does Randy Jordan get any credit for turning Chris Thompson into a key member of our offense?

        • No Punt Intended

No because there was never a question as to whether CT could play or not. The only reason he was not a part of our game plans on offense early in his career was because he was always hurt.

          So no.

          • Kelly

CT played 13 games in 2015 and 16 games in 2016, and he wasn’t a heavily used part of our offense.

          • No Punt Intended

His availability and durability have absolutely impacted his development. So irrespective of how many games he might have had a few plays, no, I afford no special credit to some no-name coach for any perceived development during the time CT was healthy and available. CT is a highly talented rotational RB who no one here should consider a franchise-carrying back.

        • Kelly

I don’t think you can blame a RB coach for a guy’s production going down. It’s not like Randy Jordan is teaching guys now to forget how to run the football. It’s also not like he’s calling running plays or putting the team into constant long yardage situations.

Basing the production of the RBs on the RB coach is the WRONG way to measure a RB coach’s effectiveness.

I can see not liking Jordan because he wasn’t able to develop Matt Jones. But that gets countered (IMO) by developing Chris Thompson. But you can’t put the running game results on the RB coach and fire him if there aren’t enough yards, that’s way too simplistic and doesn’t account for myriad factors that go into the results of the running game.

This one is BIG. Someday maybe I’ll find the SD card with him chasing the Crows off the gut pile. He landed about 30 yds from them and started “hop-strutting” towards them with his wings out. Must have been over 6′ wingspan. Those pics are clear, shot with a Nikon digital camera.

    • kon, for now

Last year, mrs kon spent what seemed like hundreds of hours watching an eagle cam from the time the hatchling broke out into the world to when it left the nest for good.

      • walter_in_fallschurch

did she see the one where mama bird brought back a cat for the babies to eat?

        • kon, for now

Pretty sure she would have brought that to my attention if she had.

  • Zig-Zag_BC

Wow, going into the thread from that link made everything white with black and light blue text.
    There ya go Walter.

    • walter_in_fallschurch

what chu talkin’ ’bout willis? there’s a way to get white background?

      • Zig-Zag_BC

Look below where Alex posted me a link. It’s the blog program home page.

So I see we’re still going strong over here.

No thanks to you, Mr. Skip-a-day

Ha yeah I was really busy at work. We all got dem days.

        • alex35332

          Crazy Democrat days

        • Zig-Zag_BC

          J/k

        • Lbsand

          Work?!?

    • Kelly

Yeah. I haven’t even seen the latest WaPo post. Tired of working around the paywall for that place.

  • kon, for now

    The future is later.

    • Kelly

I’m gonna need some more coffee if you’re gonna post deep shit like that.

    • Zig-Zag_BC

The only way out, is in.

    • alex35332

I totally forgot I had that written on the bottom of the site. That’s from when I first designed the thing and was testing things out. Figure a good George Allen quote wasn’t a bad thing to have around, and it’s really odd, Joe Gibbs didn’t have any famous catchphrases.

Ohh boy, as I continue to learn the new software I keep finding fun little tools. Apparently there’s a way for me as moderator to go into what other people write & edit their posts. That could be fun after a few whiskeys.

fyi….clicking thehogsty.com up ^ there next to total comments takes you to the channel’s disqus page. Quick way to navigate the discussions. A bit like just going to your dash instead of coming into a thread.

    • Lbsand

      Ah! Pretty cool, thanks.

    • Kelly

Yeah…Top Commenters part looks broken, though. It says nobody comments.

    • alex35332

Yes but then you don’t get to see our adds for Tress Ways game… I’m STILL waiting for my copy of that thing, wen I put money in for it last off season.

  • Lbsand

‘Redskins right tackle Morgan Moses will undergo surgery Thursday (yesterday) on his ankle per source. He does not need surgery on both ankles. His recovery time will be determined following surgery.’

He played on a torn ligament I believe I read? So our bookend tackles both had surgery.

    • No Punt Intended

I can’t believe the dude played in an NFL game on 2 sprained ankles. How do you do that?

      • walter_in_fallschurch

mettle and drugs, i suppose. those guys play with stuff that would have us on bed rest or crutches, etc… every one of them is a freak athlete.

  • Zig-Zag_BC

k0n, I keep getting a “you must be logged in to upload an image” notification. I am logged in, any ideas?

        Just trying that, thanks.

        It works, thanks Alex!

  • Zig-Zag_BC

I see the “guest liker” has defeated the “everything on the table” ideology.

    • alex35332

The only everything on the table ideology I believe in is called a lunch buffet

      • Zig-Zag_BC

        But what KIND of buffet?

        • Kelly

          Warren vs Jimmy?

          • Zig-Zag_BC

            Cheeseburger

At least the Burgundy backdrop here is easier on and more pleasing to my eyes.

Just, don’t tell that to the resident snow owl

    https://disqus.com/home/forum/thehogsty-com/commenters/

    • Kelly

      What does that do?

      • kon, for now

Shows the number of posts hamsters have made

        • alex35332

Every post should show you that info, I don’t think there’s a plugin. I get analytics as an admin.

    • Lbsand

Speaking of tools, how ya doing this morn? j/k.

    • alex35332

      What’s not registering?

      • Lbsand

        That he’s a tool.

        • Zig-Zag_BC

          He’s Irish, O’Toole.

          • Lbsand

I had an Irish uncle who wouldn’t come in from the rain. Paddy O’Furniture.

          • Zig-Zag_BC

            Aye!

      • Kelly

If Kim Jong Un had access to edit Trump’s twitter comments…

    • kon, for now

That’s called censorship. Which as it turns out, is a precursor to murder.

  • Lbsand

I didn’t know Carberry was on staff and that he coached the OL. Maybe the Skins should do a PR for these ‘lower level’ (and very important) coaching moves. Then again, THS will keep us up to speed.

“seriously someone think of something better will ya!”
    ———————–

i’d like an article about instant replay. i love replay, in theory, but it seems to me like it’s poorly implemented. why does it take 1, 2, 3 minutes for a review when we can all see the proper call in 2 replays and maybe 15 seconds? are they planning to modify how it’s done? if the thing goes back to some booth in ny, why can’t 5 people be reviewing the call each looking for certain things, like the substance of the call, as well as ball placement and time on the clock.

i want them to get all the calls right (replay benefitted the redskins more often than not this season as i recall), but i don’t like how long it takes. what, if anything, are they doing to address that?

  • kon, for now

It doesn’t have to be catchy, or, cute. Instead of…I don’t even like typing it….instead of oink oink, just say new thread. Or hellz, stick with beeps.

    • Kelly

I think beeps deserves to stay, it’s part of the community legacy.

    • alex35332

I will not stick with Beeps, as beep-beep died, or at least faked his own death which is just as well.

      • Kelly

Run a poll, but put your feelings aside and include Beeps in the poll.

      • kon, for now

The wife of the dead Beep has never objected. That’s as good as a blessing.

      • Lbsand

‘New post’ works just fine. But whatever you prefer.

  • Steve Thomas

Will have a new column up in probably 2 hours.

    • alex35332

Yep, but a coaching staff change is worth a little something, even for an assistant to the regional manager job like this.
