Game Recap Week 10 – Detroit Lions at Washington Commanders

Commanders Cannot Stop the Lions, Lose 44-22
First Quarter
The Lions won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. Noah Igbinoghene returned the kickoff 21 yards out to the Washington 26 yard line. Chris Rodriguez ran twice for 5 yards and 2 yards, before Marcus Mariota threw a deep incompletion at Zach Ertz. Tress Way punted 50 yards and Detroit returned it 5 yards.
Jahmyr Gibbs started the Lions drive with an 8 yard run up the middle and picked up the first down with a 3 yard run. Amon-Ra St. Brown then had a 16 yard catch and run. The Lions mixed up runs and passes on the drive keeping Washington’s defense off balance. Key plays include a 14 yard pass to Jameson Williams on third and six and the 14- ard touchdown pass to Gibbs in one-on-one coverage by Jordan Magee. The extra point was good giving the Lions a 7-0 lead.
Igbinoghene returned the next kickoff 46 yards and kicker Jake Bates made a touchdown saving tackle. Treylon Burks caught a 13 yard slant to begin the drive. John Bates caught a pass for 6 yards and Jeremy McNichols gained the first down with a 4 yard run. After two incompletion and a false start on Josh Conerly, Burks caught an 8 yard pass well short of the first down marker. Matt Gay connected on a 44 yard field to cut the lead to 7-3.
The Lions started with 3 big plays after the touchback. St. Brown had a 16 yard reception, David Montgomery ran 12 yards, and Sam LaPorta had a 14 yard catch. Montgomery ran twice more for 6 yards and Porta had another catch for 8 yards, before St. Brown caught a 9 yard touchdown over Mike Sainristil. The extra point made it a 14-3 Lions lead.
Washington’s next drive consisted of a 6 yard run by Jacory Croskey-Merritt and a 17 yard reception by Robbie Chosen. The drive and quarter ended three plays later with a 13 yard sack of Mariota by Brian Branch.
Second Quarter
Way punted it 47 yards and Nick Bellore tackled Kalif Raymond for loss of two yards.
Raymond caught a pass for 8 yards. Gibbs then ran for 10 yards and 27 yards. Frankie Luvu deflected a Jard Goff pass attempt, but Gibbs gain the first down with an 8-yard reception and a 3 yard run. Raymond caught a 13 yard pass and Gibbs was stopped for no gain. Javon Kinlaw was called for offside making second and 5 from Washington’s 13 yard line. Gibbs ran around right end and was pushed into the end zone by his teammates. Trey Amos was injured on the play. Daron Payne was ejected for punching St. Brown. The Lions converted a two-point attempt with Montgomery running it in. Kinlaw was called for unsportsmanlike conduct after the play. Detroit took a 22-3 lead.
Washington got its first touchdown of the game on the next drive. Mariota hit Jaylin Lane for 41 yards which put the Commanders at the Lions’ 33 yard line. Rodriguez carried twice for 10 yards. Key play was an 8 yard catch by Ertz on fourth and 1 at the 14 yard line. Rodriguez scored two plays later from the one after a 5 yard shovel pass to Samuel. The Gay extra point was good cutting the lead to 22-10.
An 18 yard incompletion to Raymond was revered after a Dan Campbell challenge. Montgomery then ran three times for 9 yards. On fourth down, LaPorta has a 14 yard reception to the Washington 27 yard line. An incompletion and a Von Miller tackle for loss made for a third and long but LaPorta picked up 9 yards on a catch. On fourth down, Raymond was left uncovered and picked up 10 yards. The Lions gained only 4 more yards, and Bates hit the 22 yard field goal to make the lead 25-3. Quan Martin was called for an unsportsmanlike penalty on the play.
Washington took a knee to end the half.
Third Quarter
After the kickoff, the drive started with a 22 yard pass to Williams, an 11 yard completion to Isaac TeSlaa, a run by Gibbs for 14 yards, an 11 yard catch by Williams and finished with a 14 yard touchdown to Williams. The extra point was good for a 32-10 lead.
Washington answered with a score on their next drive with Croskey-Merritt rushing for 17 yards during the drive and the big play provided by Burks with a 38 yard reception. Deebo Samuel scored on 5 yard wide-open catch. The two-point attempt failed, making the Lions lead 32-16.
The Lions got another big play from Williams with a 41 yard reception on a crossing route. He also had a 17 yard catch on the drive also. The drive died out on the Washington 10, but Bates nailed a 23 yard field goal to make the lead 35-16.
Washington went 3 and out after starting with a 5 yard sack of Mariota.
After the punt, Gibbs ran for 3 yards and St. Brown caught a 15 yard pass to end the quarter.
Fourth Quarter
Gibbs picks up 5 yards on the first play of the fourth quarter. Raymond ran for 10 yards around left end and LaPorta had a 7 yard reception to the Washington 44 yard line. Gibbs went around right end for 44 yards and the touchdown. The extra point was blocked by Johnny Newton making the score 41-16.
After a holding penalty on the kickoff, Washington started on their own 19 yard line. Mariota ran for 3 yards and then threw 30 yards to Ertz. Conerly picked up another false start penalty. McNichols gained back 6 yards on a run over right tackle and Ertz caught a 5 yard pass to make it third and four. On fourth down Samuel made a one-handed 19 yard catch which was upheld on the challenge. Croskey-Merritt ran for 2 yards, then McNichols caught a 4 yard pass and had a 9 yard run. A defensive holding penalty on the two-point attempt gave Washington a second try which they did not convert when Croskey-Merritt was stopped short of the goal line. The Lions lead was 41-22.
After the onside kickoff attempt failed, Montgomery ran twice for 14 yards. Jeremy Reaves broke up a pass and then Montgomery ran for 1 yard. Williams dropped a pass on third down leading to a 48-yard field goal by Bates making the score 44-22.
Josh Johnson came in for Mariota, and Washington ran the ball 3 times and then punted it away.
The Lions then ran out the clock.

When you can’t force the other team to turn the ball over, punt or turnover on downs, and give up 500+ yards on defense you lose every time.
The coaching staff need to make some kind of change on defense unless they are shooting for a top 5 draft now.
Treylon Burks was a bright spot with 3 catches for 58 yards. He looks like he has a future with the team.
We can start a new drinking game during telecasts with the phrase “decimated by injuries”.
