Washington is tied for ninth in most penalties with 56, along with Kansas City in week 8, averaging 7.0 penalties per game which is the league average.

Marshon Lattimore

By long-time reader request, Hold On will compare cornerback Marshon Lattimore’s rate of penalties across some of the other top cornerbacks in the NFL.

In 2025 Lattimore currently ranks third among defensive backs in most accepted penalties committed by a player. Rankings are:

  1. Deommodore Lenoir with 8
  2. Andru Phillips with 7
  3. Keisean Nixon, Riley Moss, Carlton Davis, Myles Harden, and Lattimore with 6
  4. Pat Surtain, Benjamin St-Juste, Jack Jones, and Upton Stout with 5

While Lattimore ranks in the top of offending DBs, there are other good players on listed who I would entertain having on my mythical roster, like Surtain, Moss, Davis, and Lenoir.

Next, we’ll look at a year over year comparison of coverage penalties against some of the top NFL cornerbacks, namely Surtain, Derek Stingley, and Sauce Gardner.

Over three years, Gardner has 15 coverage penalties, Surtain has 14, Lattimore has 12 and Stingley has an unreal number of 2.

Conclusions from this data can include:

  • Lattimore is not getting called anymore than some of the other top CBs
  • Lattimore’s numbers are going up which may indicate an erosion of physical skills and he get caught more now trying to keep up
  • Officials may be providing extra focus on DBs for coverage penalties because everyone’s numbers are trending up

While the casual fan might be upset with Lattimore (I know I am) with the number and frequency of calls against him, he not significantly out of line with other top players.
