Burgundy & Gold Game
Head coach Dan Quinn decided earlier in the offseason to have an intersquad scrimmage akin to a college spring game. The roster and coaching staff split into two groups, with the first team offense being the core of the Burgundy team with Kliff Kingsbury as the head coach and the first team defense the core of the Gold team with Joe Whitt as the head coach.
Besides the practice time for the players, the scrimmage provides the coaches with some experience performing at the next level of their profession further developing the coaching staff.
The Gold team and its defense led the team to a 14-0 victory in the two-quarter practice. Jayden Daniels had one of his worst days so far this summer, only gaining a few first downs.
Practices
With Terry McLaurin still out “injured”, Jayden Daniels and Deebo Samuel continue to work on their deep connection.

Monday Night Football
Washington’s starting defense looked a lot like the defense of last year, with mistakes and penalties. Joe Burrow led the Bengals to a couple of scores in the first half. Jayden Daniels on the hand played one series consisting of four plays, a jet sweep to Deebo Samuel for 16 yards, Chris Rodriguez ran twice for 54 yards, then Daniels scrambled for 14 yards and the touchdown. The defense couldn’t stop ex-Commander Mitch Tinsley, who had 6 receptions for 73 yards and two touchdowns. Washington lost 31-17.
Highlights:
- Chris Rodriguez averaged 10.3 yards per carry
- Jacory Croskey-Merritt had a 27-yard touchdown run over the right tackle, breaking clear and untouched. Overall, he went 11 for 46 yards
- Neither Josh Johnson nor Sam Hartman looked very good in the game. They each threw an interception and combined for 10 completions on 19 attempts for 85 yards.
- Quan Martin made a nice goal line stop on an early Bengals drive.
- Jaylin Lane made 3 catches on 6 targets for 42 yards
- Ale Kaho had 7 combined tackles
- Washington generated a good pash rush with 3 sacks and 5 QB hurries with Jacob Martin getting 1 sack and 3 hurries himself.
Literal touchdown saving tackle by Quan Martin.
