2025 Position Group Breakdown – Cornerbacks

Background

This is one of the most re-worked position groups on the team going into the 2025 season. Several players are gone from the 2024 roster, including Emmanuel Forbes, Benjamin St-Juste and Mike Davis. The team traded for Marshon Lattimore mid-season last year, but he missed games due to an existing injury. Mike Sainristil, who was drafted to be the slot cornerback, played on the outside in light of poor play from other players. Noah Igbinoghene was used to cover the slot, but he was one of the most penalized defensive backs last season. Statistically, the pass defense was not terrible:

  • 4th in yardage allowed
  • 4th in completion percentage allowed
  • 11th in yards per attempt
  • 15th in touchdowns allowed
  • 19th in passer rating allowed
  • 9th in passes over 20 yards allowed
  • 3rd in passes over 40 yards allowed
  • 27th in interceptions made

The number that stands out is the low interception rate. Turnovers are game changers and Washington is looking to improve in that area. Also, you can’t have too many good cornerbacks and tackles on your roster.

Thoughts

The secondary’s ability to defend against the pass will be highly dependent on the pass rush generated by the defensive line. What the team did was remove the weaker links and improve competition among the players. They also improved the flexibility and options of on-field player combinations.

Lattimore and Amos figure to play primarily on the outside. Sainristil and Jones can play both outside and the slot. Igbinoghene was used as the slot corner last season. This gives the team the ability to move players around to get better matchups or react to injuries.

Those five players are also the leading candidates to make the 53-man roster at cornerbacks in August. The remaining players will be looking to unseat one of them or be vying for a spot on the practice squad.

Dan Quinn and Joe Whitt have a type of player they like for the cornerback: tall, rangy with a big wingspan. Lattimore, Amos, Price, Seymor, Vigors and Cypress all fit the type.

Amos

Amos had a high 2nd round grade on him except a back injury in college made teams wary and he slid to Washington at pick 61.

Vigers

Vigers was a highly sought after undrafted free agent and received a $259,000 guarantee to sign with the Commanders.

Cypress

Cypress also drew interest from several teams and received a $145,000 guarantee to sign with the Commanders.
