The Commanders have not even held their offseason minicamp and are about 9 weeks before the start of training camp. But holding true toTthe Hog Sty creed (we have a creed?), it’s never too early to forecast who is making the final roster. We’ll take a look at each position group and rank it against the rest of the team in the NFC East.

Quarterback – NFC East Rank – #1

When is the last time you could say that Washington had the best quarterback in the NFC East? Maybe when Mark Rypien or Brad Johnson was on the team? Jayden Daniels had a rookie season that probably will not be matched for some time, taking a team that most prognosticators did not even give a chance of having a winning season, let alone playing in the NFC Championship game. Marcus Mariota re-signed, along with Sam Hartman, and Josh Johnson was signed likely as a “camp arm”.

Roster – Jayden Daniels, Marcus Mariota

Practice Squad – Sam Hartman

Released – Josh Johnson

Wide Receivers – NFC East Rank – #2

I have to go with Eagles as the number one unit in the NFC East, with the duo of A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. Washington upgraded their unit by trading for Deebo Samuel, re-signing Noah Brown, and drafting Jaylin Lane. Returning players include Terry McLaurin and Luke McCaffrey. Journeymen K.J. Osborn, Chris Moore, Michael Gallup and Lawrence Cager signed as free agents. With five spots probably locked down, everyone else is competing for the one last spot.

Roster – Terry McLaurin, Deebo Samuel, Noah Brown, Luke McCaffrey, Jaylin Lane, K.J. Osborn

Practice Squad – Michael Gallup

Released – Chris Moore, Lawrence Cager

Tight End – NFC East Rank – #3

The tight end position group within the NFC East is a pretty strong one. I have the Commanders at third behind the Cowboys and Eagles. Washington re-signed both Zach Ertz, who developed a special bond with Daniels last season with 66 receptions and seven touchdowns, and John Bates, who excels at run blocking. Returning players include Ben Sinnott, Colson Yankoff, and Cole Turner. The team also signed free agent Tyree Jackson.

Roster – Zach Ertz, Ben Sinnott, John Bates, Colson Yankoff

Practice Squad – Cole Turner

Released – Tyree Jackson

Running Back – NFC East Rank – #2

Obviously, Saquon Barkley and the Eagles get the number one ranking. The Cowboys revamped their whole running back group and Daniels out rushed the Giants Tyrone Tracy Jr. last season. Brian Robinson and Austin Ekeler both returned and the team re-signed Jeremy McNichols, Kazmeir Allen and Chris Rodriguez. Jacory Croskey-Merritt was drafted, and some pundits have pegged him as a potential surprise in the mold of Alfred Morris. Free agents Demetric Felton, Michael Wiley and Michael Strachan are also on the roster.

Roster – Brian Robinson, Austin Ekeler, Jacory Croskey-Merritt

Practice Squad – Jeremy McNichols, Kazmeir Allen

Released – Chris Rodriguez, Demetric Felton, Michael Wiley, Michael Strachan

Offensive Line – NFC East Rank – #2

The team spent significant resources to upgrade the offensive line, trading for Laremy Tunsil and drafting Josh Conerly Jr. in their offseason makeover. The Eagles still have the best offensive line unit with Washington and Dallas close together and New York bringing up the rear. Washington’s unit returns Brandon Coleman, Andrew Wylie, Sam Cosmi, Nick Allegretti, Chris Paul, and Tyler Biadasz. The team re-signed Trent Scott, Julian Good-Jones, and Michael Deiter. The team signed veteran free agents Tyre Phillips, Nate Herbig and Foster Sarell. The team also signed undrafted free agent Tim McKay, who was injured lifting during his pro day. Cosmi is also recovering from a knee injury suffered late last season and likely will not return until midseason at the earliest.

Roster – Laremy Tunsil, Brandon Coleman, Tyler Biadasz, Andrew Wylie, Josh Conerly Jr., Nick Allegretti, Trent Scott, Nate Herbig, Foster Sarell

Injured Reserve – Sam Cosmi, Tim McKay

Practice Squad – Tyre Phillips, Julian Good-Jones

Released – Chris Paul, Michael Dieter

Defensive Line – NFC East Rank – #4

Unfortunately, Washington ranks dead last in this category, having lost leading sacker Dante Fowler. The Eagles have the best defensive line, followed closely by New York and Dallas. Dorance Armstrong, Javontae Jean-Baptiste, Daron Payne, and Johnny Newton return to Washington. They re-signed Clelin Ferrell, Jalyn Holmes, Norell Pollard and Sheldon Day. Washington also signed veteran free agents Deatrich Wise, Javon Kinlaw, Eddie Goldman, Villami Fehoko Jr., plus undrafted free agent Ricky Barber.

Roster – Dorance Armstrong, Deatrich Wise, Daron Payne, Javon Kinlaw, Johnny Newton, Sheldon Day, Clelin Ferrell, Javontae Jean-Baptiste, Jayln Holmes

Practice Squad – Norell Pollard, Ricky Barber

Released – Eddie Goldman, Villami Fehoko Jr.

Linebackers – NFC East Rank – #3

Dallas and Philadelphia have the best linebacker units in the division, so Washington ranks third here. Frankie Luvu and Jordan Magee return, and the team re-signed Bobby Wagner and special teamer Nick Bellore. Washington also signed free agent Jacob Martin, drafted Kain Medrano and signed undrafted free agents Kam Arnold and Ale Kaho.

Roster – Frankie Luvu, Bobby Wagner, Jordan Magee, Jacob Martin, Kain Medrano

Practice Squad – Ale Kaho

Released – Nick Bellore, Kam Arnold

Cornerbacks – NFC East Rank – #2

The Cowboys are ranked first here and with the Eagles cornerbacks in flux, Washington comes in second for now. The Commanders revamped this unit from the start of last season, trading for Marshon Lattimore last season. Mike Sainristil returns and the team re-signed Noah Igbinoghene. Along with drafting Trey Amos, Washington signed veterans Jonathan Jones, Bobby Price, Allan George and Kevon Seymour. On paper, this should be a much improved unit over last year. Additionally, undrafted free agents Robert McDaniel, Car’lin Vigers and Fentrell Cypress were signed.

Roster – Marshon Lattimore, Mike Sainristil, Trey Amos, Jonathan Jones, Noah Igbinoghene,  Fentrell Cypress

Practice Squad – Car’lin Vigers, Robert McDaniel

Released – Allan George, Kevon Seymour, Bobby Price

Safeties – NFC East Rank – #2

This group is one of the hardest to rank, with so many changes across the various NFC East teams. I put Washington at two with the Giants at 1 and Cowboys at 3. Quan Martin, Percy Butler, Jeremy Reaves, Tyler Owens, Dominique Hampton return from last season. The team re-signed Ben Nikkel and signed free agent Will Harris to replace Jeremy Chinn.

Roster – Quan Martin, Will Harris, Percy Butler, Jeremy Reaves, Tyler Owens, Dominique Hampton

Practice Squad – Ben Nikkel

Special Teams – NFC East Rank – #1

The addition of Matt Gay at the kicker position moves this unit from second position to first position in the division. Tress Way already had the best net average in the NFC East at 43.1 yards per punt. Tyler Ott remains one of the most consistent long snappers in the NFL.

Punter – Tress Way

Kicker – Matt Gay

Long Snapper – Tyler Ott
