Background

Washington lost Dante Fowler and his 10.5 sacks to Dallas in free agency. Fowler did not always play well against the run, but Washington did not sign a free agent or draft a player with the potential to replace those sacks. Washington is looking to bolster its run defense by signing players like Deatrich Wise and Jacob Martin. Washington re-signed several players with the team last year:

Thoughts

Washington, with 43 sacks, ranked 11th in sacks last season and relied on blitzes much of the time to generate a pass rush. Fowler alone accounted for almost 25% of the total sacks. None of the returning or newly signed players had more than 5 sacks season.

It is interesting that the front office did not address the position more in free agency or the draft. They can still address it now. There are still players available in the free agent market such as Von Miller, Za’Darius Smith, Matt Judon and Preston Smith who could be used as a one-year stop gap. I expect the team to further address this position group in some manner before the start of the season.

As of today, the starters project as Armstrong and Wise with Ferrell and Martin rotating in. Holmes and Jean-Baptiste would be spot players, with the remaining players vying for a practice squad roster spot. Training camp will determine who ends up with what role.
