Roster and Salary Cap Update

May 2, 2025

by Steve Thomas

Since we’re at a slow post-draft Friday, I thought I’d take this opportunity to provide everyone with a quick roster and salary cap update.

Summary

After the draft and undrafted free agent signings, Washington now has a total of 87 players on the roster, including the rookie draft choices, who are technically unsigned, and one player in the international pathway program.  The team has approximately $27M in free cap space under the offseason Rule of 51, but if the estimated rookie draft choices are taken into account, the free space drops to approximately $23.6M.  These numbers do not include the contract data for new kicker Matt Gay, because the details of his contract are not yet available.

I’ll also take a quick look by position group.

Defense

The defense as a whole currently has 40 players, including the unsigned draft choices, for a total 2025 cap hit of almost $131M under the Rule of 51.  The defense occupies approximately 44% of available cap space, including all signed players, not just the players subject to the rule of 51.  The percentage does not include the unsigned draft picks.

Defensive line

Washington currently has 15 defensive linemen on the roster, at a total combined cap hit of a little more than $52M under the Rule of 51.  The total position group, not just those players who are above the Rule of 51 line, accounts for more than 20% of the team’s total salary cap.

Linebackers

Washington has currently has 6 linebackers, counting Nick Bellore, who some list as a fullback but the team lists as a linebacker, for a total cap hit of approximately $14.5M under the Rule of 51.  The linebacker group occupies a total of a little more than 5% of available cap space.

Defensive backs

There are 19 defensive backs on Washington’s roster, including 10 corners and 9 safeties, for a total cap hit of just under $40M under the Rule of 51.  This position group occupies a total of approximately 15.75% of available cap space.

Offense

The offense currently has 44 players, including the unsigned draft picks, for a total cap hit of approximately $139M under the Rule of 51.  The total offense, not just the players above the Rule of 51 line, occupies about 50% of available cap space, not including the unsigned rookie draft choices.

Tight Ends

There are currently 6 tight ends on the roster, who account for a total of slightly more than $13M in cap space under the Rule of 51.  The group fills a total of about 5% of available cap space, including all 6 players.

Offensive Line

The team now has 16 offensive lineman, including the unsigned draft picks, for a total of about $58.5M in cap space under the Rule of 51.  The total group fills more than 20% of the salary cap, including all 16 players.

Wide Receiver

Washington currently has 9 wide receivers, including the unsigned draft pick, for a $37M cap hit under the Rule of 51.  The receiver group as a whole accounts for more than 13% of the salary cap, including all 9.

Running Backs

Washington has 9 running backs on the roster, including the unsigned draft pick, for cap hit of just less than $12M under the Rule of 51.  The group occupies under 5% of available cap space, including all players except the unsigned draft pick.

Quarterbacks

Washington has 4 quarterbacks under contract for a total cap hit of approximately $18M under the Rule of 51.  The quarterbacks occupy more than 6% of available cap space.

Specialists

Washington has three specialists.  Their cap hit is $2.9M, but this does not including Matt Gay’s cap hit, which isn’t available.  The total value of his contract is reportedly $4.25M.
