First Quarter

The New York Giants won the coin toss and deferred until the second half, so Washington started the game on offense.  Washington’s first series featured a combination of running behind Antonio Gibson and Jaret Patterson and passing from Taylor Heinicke to Terry McLaurin. The big play was a 30 yard completion to McLaurin on a scramble by Heinicke to extend the play. Gibson ran for 25 yards on the drive and Patterson 7 yards. But the drive stalled inside the Giants 10 yard line after Heinicke overthrew an open Cam Sims in the end zone, so Joey Slye was called on to kick the 23 yard field goal.

Jake Fromm started at quarterback for the Giants because of injuries to both Daniel Jones and Mike Glennon. He was able to lead the Giants down the field with the big play being an 18 yard scramble by Fromm. The Giants were faced with a fourth and 1 and were able to draw Matt Ioannidis offsides to get the first down. After that play, the Giants found themselves in another fourth and 1 situation; however this time Jamin Davis made a great play off the edge to tackle Alex Bachman for a three yard loss.

On Washington’s next series, McLaurin caught a 12 yard pass to move the ball out over midfield, but the Giants defense stiffened at that point. A deep throw to McLaurin  was nearly intercepted by Xavier McKinney but McLaurin broke up that catch. Tress Way punted the ball into the end zone.

Second Quarter

Washington held the Giants to a three and out on their next series.

After the punt by Riley Dixon, Heinicke took a sack for a 4 yard loss on first down and the drive never covered. Way boomed a 55 yard punt after the three and out, but Bachman returned it 15 yards.

The Giants were only able to pick up three yards on their next drive before Jonathan Allen and William Bradley-King combined for a sack of Fromm on third down.

Following another Dixon punt, Washington started off the drive with a 27 yard run by Gibson. After that, though, Washington was only able to pick up 10 more yards before having to punt. Sims was able to down Way’s punt at the Giants three yard line.

After picking up a false start penalty on second down, the Giants ran back to back quarterback sneaks on second and third down and punted. The play calling brought a loud chorus of boos from Giants fans and the announcer derided head coach Joe Judge for his decisionmaking.

Washington proved equally inept on offense, going for another three and out, however this time the punt went into the end zone give the Giants better field position. They did nothing with it though and punted again.

Heinicke hit McLaurin for a 40 yard completion on the left sideline, but then took a 10 yard sack on the next play. Washington was able to gain back 14 yards on the next two plays and Slye hit a 43 yard field goal to end the half.

Third Quarter

On the first drive of the third quarter, the Giants picked up a first down after starting with a false start by Andrew Thomas. Fromm threw a nice deep pass on third and twelve down the sideline toward Kenny Golladay who made a lackadaisical, failing attempt to make the catch after beating Darryl Roberts.  The punt went out of bounds at the Washington 9 yard line.

Washington opened their next drive with three straight runs, with Jonathan Williams gaining 23 yards on a third and two play. After an 11 yard run by Williams on fourth and 1 at midfield the drive fizzled out and Washington was forced to punt.

The Giants were able to pick up the second first of the quarter on the next drive on a pass from Fromm to Devontae Booker. Then the Washington defense took over and Bobby McCain intercepted a pass to Evan Engram and returned it for a touchdown. Washington failed to convert the two-point conversion attempt.

Fromm was able to pick up a first down on a five yard scramble on the next drive. The quarter ended with the Giants facing a fourth down and five yards to go for a first down.

Fourth Quarter

The Giants were able to complete the pass to Saquon Barkley on a legal pick play to make the first down. On another fourth down play, Fromm hit Golladay for 7 yards to pick up the first. Then on third and 7, Jeremy Reaves, playing for an injured Kamren Curl, allowed Darius Slayton to get deep uncovered for a 22 yard touchdown. Graham Gano converted the extra point.

Washington responded with its best offensive series of the game. Behind the running of Gibson for 57 yards, along with Patterson and Williams relieving him, drove 72 yards in 10 plays. The drive was capped by a Gibson 18 yard touchdown run behind a nice seal block by John Bates. Slye converted the extra point.

Fromm fumbled the ball trying to pass on the first play of the next drive and Tim Settle Jr recovered the ball at the New York 12 yard line. Washington was able to drive the ball down to the four yard line.  Slye converted the 23 yard field goal.

On the subsequent drive, the Giants had two incompletions and a sack by James Smith-Williams and Shaka Toney on third down.  New York was forced to punt.

DeAndre Carter was interfered with on the fair catch giving Washington the ball back on their own 48 yard line after the penalty. Washington spent the next drive running the ball to take time of the clock, giving the Giants the ball back at the two-minute warning.

The Giants were able to drive the ball mainly behind an 18 yard pass interference call on Daryl Roberts and a 27 yard scramble by Fromm. Four plays later after the scramble, on fourth and three, Fromm threw another interception to McCain to end the game.
