Nick Absolutely NOT Wright!!!

Sports Sensationalism…Well Put

One of our own writers, Noonefromtampa, said something I believe most fans with at least a single coherent brain cell still firing already know which today’s sports reporting is all about likes and clicks. Since the rise of Skip Bayless over 10 years ago to now Nick Wright, it’s not about being accurate or even reputable as it’s all about garnering a reaction, like this article here, from baseless remarks. Now I am not saying “journalists” like Skip and Nick don’t carry any substance at all when it comes to the NFL; they just seem to hide it on air rather well. For those wondering what ridiculous comment has Nick made, now well wait no longer:

The statement Nick makes is not just ridiculous but it is just not something a coherent NFL fan would have said with a straight face. The idea that Fitzpatrick and Heinicke are not an upgrade at quarterback from last year plus McLaurin is “Just ok I guess” screams an attention seeker trying to draw in clicks and cheap reactions. By the way, Nick, well played as you lured me hook line and sinker. But if his just trying to garner reactions, why am I feeding into his game? Simply put, I am just tired of not only the terrible misrepresentation Washington still receives at times but I also long for the days when sports reporting had actual substance and was not sensationalized just for the clicks.

Ryan Fitzpatrick Best Quarterback Since Kirk Cousins

Before some of you roll your eyes when I mention Kirk, let’s understand the reference I am eluding to: consistency and production. Kirk was always about an average quarterback, but while leading an often explosive offense he ranked 6th, 6th, and 17th in the ESPN total QBR and finished about 9K yards behind Washington all-time passing leader Joe Theismann despite starting 100 fewer games. I know it’s a different era of football as it’s now a passing league but we also cannot discount what Kirk has done even with his flaws as a quarterback. How this is relevant to Ryan Fitzpatrick is that the last 3 years he’s finished in the top 10 of ESPN total QBR and is arguably playing the best football of his long career. He is entering a quarterback room ranked 31st in the NFL last season where Heinicke, putting college studies off to the side late in the year, played the best football of anyone in his lone start against Tampa Bay. As John Keim discusses, throughout Ryan’s career, this team might be the best situation he’s stepped into, especially at the running back position. Just Ryan’s presence alone over what the team had last year coupled with a 1 year better defense logically makes them a better team.

Skill Position Players

Let’s just start with maybe the most ignorant part of all the Nick Wright statement, which is when said about Terry McLaurin, “He’s ok I guess.” As Nick rambles off the nonsense of Terry not being a top 15 wide receiver, Tim Meek easily points out just how good he’s been under the worst of circumstances. While D.K. Metcalf is understandably being compared to Calvin Johnson as he plays for one of the league’s top quarterbacks, Terry has outperformed him in 2 of 3 categories despite some of the worst quarterback play in the NFL. Do I even need to go one any further? I could rest my case here and Nick Wright would easily be convicted for football insanity.

Why stop there though? Antonio Gibson, as a rookie, had 36 receptions while amassing over 1K scrimmage yards and 11 TDs. J.D. McKissic proved to be a weapon out of the backfield in the passing game, with a career-best 80 receptions in 110 targets. Logan Thomas had a coming out party. He finished 3rd among tight ends in targets and receptions as he tallied nearly 700 receiving yards and 6 TDs. When taking all this into account for the skill position players, plus the addition of Curtis Samuel and Dyami Brown,  in no coherent universe does this offense look offensive. In fact, considering the promise this unit brings with Ryan as the quarterback and backed by a promising young and talented defense, any discussion by a so-called “journalist” that excludes Washington from any division title scenario should result in immediate removal from such a large platform as Nick Wright occupies.

In Closing

In reality, I just don’t take comments from people like Skip Bayless and Nick Wright too seriously anyway, because it truly is all sports media sensationalism nowdays. Our own Steve Thomas, after viewing Wright’s video, thought Wright was being intentionally hyperbolic and silly on a silly show just to get attention. As this may very well be true, it’s just frustrating seeing this is where sports reporting is today, especially after the era I came from. So for those who continue to endure the Skip Baylesses and Nick Wrights of the sporting world (other than humor), I can only hope you see the light before it’s too late.
