Game Summary

First Quarter

The Washington Football Team started the game on offense against the Detroit Lions. The team drove down the field into scoring position, but two consecutive negative plays led to a loss of 24 yards and forced them to punt. Alex Smith looked sharp, completing passes of 22 yards to Isaiah Wright and 19 yards to Terry McLaurin. The Lions got 32 yards rushing from D’Andre Swift and were then able to get a 55 yard touchdown pass from Matthew Stafford to Marvin Hall. WFT responded with a 9 play drive for 54 yards that resulted in a Dustin Hopkins 38 yard field goal. The Lions were then held to 16 yards on 6 plays and forced to punt. A key play on that drive was a 15 yard penalty on Kevin Pierre-Louis for “Lowering the Head to Initiate Contact” on a sack of Stafford.

Score: Lions 7, WFT 3

Second Quarter

WFT responded with a 3 and out deep in their own territory on their next series. The Lions then had a 6 play, 53 yard drive that resulted in a Marvin Jones 27 yard touchdown. Adrian Peterson had a 13 yard run and 9 yard reception on that drive. Danny Johnson had a 46 yard kickoff return to provide good field position. The big play on the drive was a 13 yard catch and run by Cam Sims; however, the drive unfortunately stalled and Hopkins missed his 43 yard field goal attempt. J.D. McKissic also had 15 yards receiving on the drive but Smith overthrew a wide open McKissic streaking down the sideline for a sure touchdown. The WFT defense then stiffened and held the Lions to a 3 and out. Washington then went on a 10 play drive covering 48 yards which ended with a McLaurin fumble that was recovered by the Lions. Stafford then led the Lions in the two minute offense, driving 39 yards in 7 plays and resulted in a 53 yard field goal by Matt Prater.

Score: Lions 17, WFT 3

Third Quarter

The Lions opened the second half with an impressive 7 minute, 11 play, 85 yard drive which ended with Swift catching a 15 yard touchdown pass of 15 yards in which he ran over and through Washington defenders. Swift also caught a 25 yard screen pass on 2 and 20, while Jones had an 18 yard reception. WFT responded with a 11 play, 82 yard drive capped by a 2 yard touchdown run by McKissic. The key play on Washington’s scoring drive was a 15 yard reception by Logan Thomas on 4th down and 13 yards to go taking the ball to the Lions 2 yard line. Other big plays on the drive were a 20 yard completion to McLaurin, 11 yard completion to Cam Sims and a 12 yard run by Antonio Gibson. WFT then held the Lions to a 3 and out.

Score: Lions 24, WFT 10

Fourth Quarter

Washington answered with a 11 play, 84 yard drive, their best of the game. Smith was able to spread the ball around with pass completions to Cam Sims, Thomas, Wright, Gibson and McLaurin. Gibson scored a 2 yard touchdown run. The WFT defense held the Lions to another 3 and out, aided by an offensive holding call on first down. Chase Young was almost called for a facemask penalty on a 3rd down sack of Stafford but the officials picked up the flag  after determining he did not grab the facemask. Alex Smith then drove Washington 61 yards in 6 plays for the tying score, and Hopkins converted the extra point to tie it. Key plays on this drive were a 23 yard completion to Steven Sims Jr. and a 27 yard completion to Thomas. Gibson scored on a 6 yard run to the left side by outrunning the Lions to the corner. The Lions were able to mount a 11 play, 56 yard drive behind the running of Swift, who accounted for 46 yards of offense on the drive. Prater was good with the 37 yard field goal attempt. WFT drove for the tying 41 yard field goal aided by several Lions defensive penalties that gave Washington first downs in critical situations. Amazingly, Stafford drove the Lions 34 yards in 16 seconds, aided by a roughing the quarterback call on Young, and Prater kicked the game winning 59 yard field goal as time expired.
