Game Recap – Week 3 – WFT at Browns

Game Summary

First Quarter

The Browns opened on offense starting with a six play, 33 yard drive before Washington’s defense stiffened and forced a punt, which was fair caught at the eight yard line. That was the first stop on an opponent’s opening drive this season. The Washington Football Team (WFT) was able to mount a seven-play drive, aided by a 15 yard personal foul penalty but then stalled and we forced to punt, trapping the Browns inside their own 20. On the next Browns drive the defense had the Browns in a 3 and 9 situation but allowed an 18 yard completion to Odell Beckham Jr.  Later in the drive, Jonathan Allen sacked Baker Mayfield on third down to force the Browns to punt. WFT then drove 75 yards in 8 plays to score first in a game for the first time this season. Dwayne Hopkins threw a 17 yard touchdown pass to Dontrelle Inman. Key plays on the drive included a 22 yard run by Antonio Gandy-Golden and a 21 yard pass reception by Terry McLaurin.

Second Quarter

Cleveland responded with a 13 play, 42-yard drive, aided by a taunting penalty assessed on the kick-off, scoring a 42 yard field goal by Cody Parkey. WFT came back with its own 7 play, 44 yard drive that ended in a Haskins interception where he overthrew a well-covered Logan Thomas. Karl Joseph returned the ball 49 yards before fumbling it which was recovered by a Cleveland player. The Browns then scored a touchdown on a Nick Chubb 16 yard run, completing a 3 play, 26 yard drive. WFT then responded with a three and out series. The WFT defense then held the Browns to a three and out series. Haskins then threw his second interception of the game on the next series. The Browns the converted the turnover into a 9 yard touchdown pass from Mayfield to Kareem Hunt. Antonio Gibson fumbled on the last play of the half to give WFT three turnovers in one quarter of play.

Third Quarter

WFT started the second half with a three and out series with zero yards gained. WFT’s defense to a three and out aided by an intentional grounding penalty on Mayfield. Steven Sims Jr. had a good return on the Browns punt of 18 yards. WFT’s offense then took advantage of the good field position to drive 47 yards on 6 plays capped by a 2 yard Gibson rushing touchdown. Dustin Hopkins missed the extra point. The defense then held the Browns to another 3 and out with a loss of eight yards thanks to a sack by Montez Sweat. After the punt, WFT drove 12 plays, 54 yards for a 11 yard touchdown reception by Inman, his second of the day. WFT had 41 yards rushing on the drive and a key play on 4 and 2, with a reception by Logan Thomas for the first down.

Fourth Quarter

The Browns then drove 75 yards on 11 plays to score on a 3 yard touchdown pass to Harrison Bryant. Key play was a 25 yard run by Chubb. On the next series, Terry McLaurin got called for offensive pass interference which backed the Team up. Haskins then threw his third interception on third and long. The Browns drove down the field and scored on 20-yard tackle breaking run by Chubb. WFT had a 6 play, 16 yard drive going which was ended by a strip sack of Haskins by Myles Garrett, which Garrett recovered. The Browns then went on a time-consuming drive, running Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt to whittle down the clock. The 10 play, 34 yard drive ended with a 30-yard field goal. Washington ran out the clock to end the game.
