Coaching Changes

2020 brings a new coaching staff to the Giants. Joe Judge, the former Patriots special teams coach, takes over from Pat Shurmur. Since Tom Coughlin left, no Giants coach has lasted more than two seasons. The new offensive coordinator is Jason Garrett and the defensive coordinator is Patrick Graham. Six Bill Belichick assistants have become head coaches in the NFL, but only Bill O’Brien has seen any success. The other five all have losing records, with Brian Flores and Matt Patricia still employed as head coaches.

Summary

The Giants focused on two areas this offseason: improving the defense and improving the offensive line. They franchise tagged defense end Leonard Williams ($16.1M), signed big money free agents James Bradberry (3 years, $43.5M) and Blake Martinez (3 years, $30.7M) and drafted Xavier McKinney. The offensive line added Cameron Fleming as a free agent and drafted Andrew Thomas, Matt Peart and Shane Lemieux. The Giants have a tough schedule to open the season, with games against the Steelers, 49ers, Rams and Cowboys in the first five weeks.

The Giants signed quarterback Colt McCoy to back up Daniel Jones for $2.2M. If Colt makes it all the through the 2020 season, his career earnings will be over $19M over 11 years. For the mathmatically challenged, that’s an average of $1.7M a year for holding a clipboard on Sundays.

The Philadelphia Eagles are up next week.
