Progression of younger talent at running back did not work out; search for Alfred Morris replacement continues

January 25, 2018

by Jamual Forrest

When the Redskins drafted 2015 third-round pick Matt Jones, comparisons to Marshawn Lynch were planted in the heads of fans by former General Manager Scot McCloughan. Fans took the bait presented to them, but in the end, Washington whiffed on the selection as Jones struggled to take over at the position as he was expected to. The decision by Washington to move on from Alfred Morris after the 2015 season was mainly due to the fact that Jones was supposed to progress to the point where he would be able to be effective in both the pass and run game for the offense. During the same 2016 season, undrafted rookie free agent Robert Kelley had an opportunity as the starting running back after Matt Jones proved he was incapable of protecting the football. Kelley had a solid rookie season, but faltered this past season, ultimately missing the second-half of the season due to injury. Other notable running backs like Chris Thompson, Samaje Perine, Kapri Bibbs, Byron Marshall, and even Mack Brown to a degree has had their turn to make a difference at the position, but injuries and average play prevented them from being more than just a guy for Washington.

Of course, Chris Thompson was one of the best weapons in the NFL this season for Washington, but if the team is looking for him to be a primary workhorse, he is not that. Alfred Morris, who is now with Dallas, is not the missing piece that Washington has been looking for these past two seasons since he left. However, his first two seasons in the NFL with Washington is what the Redskins are severely missing right now in a running back. Even in his last two seasons with Washington, where he was not as effective, he was still somewhat productive, something the Redskins have struggled to find in a running back since that time. There is no telling what the current Redskins running backs are capable of in the upcoming season and beyond, but there are undoubtedly plenty of top-tier running backs that will be available via free agency and draft this forthcoming offseason. This position will be high-priority for Washington, or at least it should be, which is an offense that relies too heavily on the aerial attack.

oh my god…. we just finished season 7 of game of thrones last night. we plowed right through that show. omg. as it was ending, my wife said, “this is the best show ever”. cracked me up. and, it probably is the best drama show i’ve watched.

the ending kind of snuck up on me because there were 10 episodes to every season, except the last. when it ended, i was thinking there are 3 more episodes…. but no. damn, that’s an incredible show.

We have our IT Service Catalog, you can order, new thin client, monitor, phone, headset, etc.

you cannot get a new mouse or keyboard

you have to call the Helpless Desk and tell them they are broken and you need a new one

which instead of 30 seconds filling out a web form, you’re going to spend 30 minutes on the phone waiting and then explaining to someone why you need a new keyboard or mouse

I feel sorry for my guy, his ASZX keys are not working right

  • Noone Kirk Scenario

    1. Here’s our best offer
    2. If you don’t like it, go shop yourself around the league and we will trade you to that team because we are not letting you without getting some value
    3. If you don’t come back to us before 3/6 we are f-tagging you
    4. Once you sign that offer, we are trading you to Cleveland
    5. Or you can sit out a whole year and play for someone else in 2019

    • That’s really stupid

    • I get it, but there are just way too many moving parts. I think tagging him is a huge mistake. They need to make their best offer quickly, tell him that there’s a time limit, and if he rejects, let him walk, take the comp pick, and get on with finding a new #1 QB. Cousins is a good QB, but neither he nor the difference between a 3rd round comp pick and either a 1st or 2nd is worth dragging this situation out for months. To me, at least. The Redskins should not turn this into a soap opera for a third straight offseason.

And I still don’t think Cleveland is going to trade for him, regardless.

      • Bruce will make it a soap opera because he has to be right

        • I agree with you there. I’d bet the house that, one way or the other, we’re going to see another absurd press conference from Bruce from some back room at Redskins Park again.

          • There will be press conferences, leaks, etc.

I am 97% sure this will be a huge drama from Feb 20 to Mar 20

the press will be feasting wildy

            Winter is Coming!

what kind of trade scenario are you imagining?! kirk has all the cards. no one is going to sign, or trade for, him on a franchise tag. my understanding of a transition tag is that he gets to choose what to do with that offer. what do we get in return if he leaves after we’ve transition tagged him?

  • I honestly can’t believe we’re talking about Kirk Cousins contract situation again this offseason. What a clusterfuck.

  • Rick Snider told 106.7 yesterday that the Redskins need to just immediately put their no-kidding best 5 year offer on the table, make it known that that’s it, and force Cousins to refuse it. If that happens, everyone will know that the problem really isn’t about the money, and then both parties can move on. I 100% agree with that plan.

    • On this we agree
Still need to field 53 other players on the team

    • No Punt Intended

Everyone agrees with that. That approach is easy. Anyone can say, “Derrrrrrrrrr, put your best and final out there so we can all have a rapid solution one way or another, derrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.”

All you’ll end up with is guaranteeing Kirk moving on without any negotiation whatsoever.

      • Hey, dolt, the point is to avoid a big negotiating quagmire. The team needs to end the madness quickly, and if that means he moves on, fine, because the team has to move on, too. That’s what Rick was saying and what I agree with.

    • that is a faulty conclusion. if they think they can get 16% from an otherwise playoff contender (in their mind), and the Skins offer 14.5% then it could still be about the money, that difference could be like 8-10 mil g’d over the first half or so of the contract

    • That’s what I’ve been saying all along. Tell him he’s loved, lay out your plans for the future, show him the big picture, and put a great offer on the table.

    • Agree with this. I’m sure Kirk’s response would be that he’s very pleased with the offer but he doesn’t want to make any decisions until he can talk to other teams.

Steve, Do you think the offer Bruce Allen leaked in 2017 was insultingly low? It seemed in line with the numbers you had written about a KC contract in 2017.

    https://www.ninersnation.com/2017/7/17/15985880/washington-president-bruce-allen-statement-kirk-cousins-contract-offer

    • Yes, I do. It was allegedly a three year deal, but that deal included the already signed franchise deal, so it was really a 2 year extension; plus, the guarantees were low. To me, the Redskins needed to offer him a lowball 5 year deal to get negotiations started. IMO, a 3 year deal was an absolute nonstarter and why they didn’t respond. To me, it was the equivalent of walking out of the room for effect during a mediation.

      • His agent was NOT going to negotiate
There is nothing else to say

        • His agent would have 100% negotiated had the Redskins shown a bit of good faith, which they didn’t appear to do. Agents always listen when big money is offered.

          • His agent said that they were not going to negotiate

            There is reality

            And pretendville

          • I couldn’t care less what his agent says to the media months after the fact. It’s total hogwash made for public perception reasons. Agents will always listen to a serious offer. All it would have taken is a real 5 year deal on the table.

          • No Punt Intended

You clearly know zippy about how to negotiate.

Nor can you recognize when one side is willing to deal and another side has no interest.

        • I disagree with Steve about damn near everything, but I completely respect the amount of time and effort he puts into researching his positions on Redskins financial moves. I can’t think of anyone I would rather turn to if I needed to understand how a contract or an offer was broken down.

This idea that “Kirk’s team refused to ever listen to anything from Day 1” idea is bullshit. Even if the intent all along was to force the Skins to franchise tag Kirk, why would they not want to know what the offer was? That’s ridiculous.

If the offer was stupid, I can see them not responding to it – but this idea that they had agreed ahead of time to never counter offer anything is just dumb.

    • I’ve argued for two years now that the FT was too close to perceived market for either side to really really negotiate so long as Cousins was willing to bet on himself. FTY3 is different.

That doesn’t mean the Skins might be fed up and ready to move on, or that Kirk is too.

  • pick #13 can be very good for us
rumor is several teams may be looking to move up to address specific position needs
teams most likely – Dallas and Detriot
odds are we could move back some and still draft Mason Rudolph or a good DL pick and pick up an extra pick in either 2nd or 3rd round

    • I’d check to see if a Planet Fitness type place has monthly rates without a joining fee, but heck, here’s the thing, sometimes Planet Fitness has discount to $99 annual fee with no membership (joining fee). The math on that is simple, if you’re paying $100-120 per year, then you have to find some real cheap cardio equipment to make the math work, and not only that, they’re open 24 x 7. I’m not a member because I hit the pool and the squat rack a couple of times a week, but if cardio/resistance is what you’re looking for…

      • Yea, when I was in Ohio I did Planet Fitness. Here I go to Crunch… both good with cheap basic monthly plans.

        • We actually have one here. (PF) I’ll have to check it out. Month to month might work for me, because I only really need it January to March. I don’t mind the cold, but I don’t want to break/tear something on the ice.

  • If KC leaves
I’m gonna wish him well until he plays the Redskins

  • How will we feel if he takes a deal from another team, and then “sources” come out and say that the Redskins actually offered more money?

There are lots of possible ways this thing goes. And that is one, even if remote.

    • No Punt Intended

Some say that’s why Kirk never countered the Skins initial/only multi-year offer…..

He was afraid the team would actually pay it and he does not want to play here.

      • Kirk never countered because the Redskins offer was insultingly low, and wasn’t even a 5 year deal. I wouldn’t have countered either.

        • ^This a million percent!

        • That was 2015
In 2016 they made another offer and got radio silence from KC

A montage of Isaiah Wynn (@iwynn77) dominating the Senior Bowl. What a talent

  • You reading this shit, right k0n?

  • Let KC walk
Have a HUGE foray into FA
    Have a great draft

    I’m really happy with that

  • The way it has worked over the last 10 years has pretty much been that a new bench mark is set for QB salaries, and then within the old benchmark looks pretty reasonable. But there will be a tipping point where people look back at a salary and shake their head.

If Kirk goes all “in it for the money” to Cleveland. His legacy is likely to be as the guy who toppled the tipping point.

    • No Punt Intended

I was among a few here that suggested paying Kirk what most thought was too much would look like a bargain in very short order after the 2016 season. Remember when the numbers people were saying “NO WAY!” to was basically a 5-year deal at 21mil per year with 60 guaranteed?

Yeah. I do. And that would be a freaking bargain right now.

We are beyond the point of making a deal that works for this team. And if you have to ask yourself whether Kirk is worth that kind of money, then he’s not.

      Happy trails, KC.

      • the cost has maybe gone up 2% (from 14 ish to 16 ish?)

        • No Punt Intended

The point is the market dictates Kirk getting much more than what’s reasonable for the Redskins.

So you think he’s worth a deal slightly above what Matt Stafford signed for or more?

          You’re crazy.

          • well, a deal worth what Stafford got now is actually “less” of a deal than what Stafford got

will the market bear that out? I don’t think quite so much. Not at least on the front end bonus. I doubt a new team offers him 51 mil cash first year, and the question might be is if any team is will not to do him dirty like the Skins tried (in his mind) with at least a defacto 3 year g’d deal (bonus plus g’d salary is ostensibly 3 years worth or g’s and cutting him year 3 is nearly impossible even w/o it). Would the Skins go even 15.5%? That would be about 27 mil, depending on what the final cap is. That would put him between the Stafford/Lucks of the world and D Carr.

          • No Punt Intended

….and he’s not as good as any of those QB’s.

            So…..yeah.

          • the theoretical part of this isn’t about as being AS GOOD as those QBs, it is the fact that BECAUSE those OTHER QBs did NOT hit FA, economically-theoretically, they ARE UNDERPAID.

          • that’s the theory Mike McCartney is “testing”

          • No Punt Intended

            Duh.

It’s about whether a player is worth what his market value is.

            Some are, some aren’t.

            Kirk isn’t.

          • but don’t miss the fact that those other contracts are not market value contracts, we don’t know what that is

I think Kirk prob gets maybe an offer in the D Carr 15% range with not quite so many g’s and that’s disappointing to his agent

but if you listen to chatter outside Redskin fans, people think higher of Cousins, I don’t mean Rodgers or Brady, but Stafford ain’t sniffing them either.

But the thing is, if the Skins bring in even a Baker Mayfield there’s a real solid chance he won’t ever be as good as Cousins is now. And if we think Cousins is just a notch above a serviceable guy you can build a team around, then might might mean still having to search for another QB even if you build a great team around that draft kid.

          • No Punt Intended

            Dude, seriously, shut up.

Kirk is not worth to the Redskins what other teams are going to be tripping over one another to pay him.

Jesus fucking Christ are you able to understand that?

Because I don’t think you are.

          • KC would have to ‘allow’ the Redskins to purchase his services for far less than what others seem willing to pay. I can’t blame KC at all. Our team President? Yes, I blame him 100%

          • the problem with FA is you just don’t know how a guy might fit in a new offense on a new team with new coaches, and that usually means, they want to rig the deal so it looks like a big deal, but it’s only like a 2 year contract. if you want Cousins to stay, that might be how he stays even after free agency.

          • No Punt Intended

What the fuck are you even talking about?

          • other teams might not be willing to offer a contract with 3+ years of g’s at signing

          • No Punt Intended

            How to you know this?

            You don’t.

          • other teams might not for the reason I explained, I know that part of it because it is good logic

what plays out in FA nobody actually knows until they claim to have in hindsite later in their blog

I mean, the Raiders believe so much in Derek Carr that they can cut him after this year, and HE’s playing on the same team with the same offense, much less to evaluate and risk. So, don’t kick Kirk to the curb quite yet.

          • No Punt Intended

“other teams might not for the reason I explained, I know that part of it because it is good logic”

“Haaaaa-hahahahahahahahahahaha. Sorry, that’s just so funny to me. HAAAAAA-HAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!”

            – Bruce

          • Agreed, Mike. Plus, if he’s realistic, he might note that switching systems doesn’t always work out for “really good” QBs, even if the great ones (Farve, Brees, Manning) make it look pretty easy.

          • they are measuring his value against a great unknown, the most known known is Colt McCoy, and he wasn’t the starter.

      • Yeah. Had the Skins done a similar deal, they’d be in a great situation now with a team that, if healthy, could have probably beat the Saints and Vikings, and likely split with the Eagles.

(The injuries made this year’s team look a lot worse than it was, as we all know.)

      • Yes, you’re correct. I said as much in the past. Who’s responsible for this debacle? Kelly wrote a good bit about that a few days ago…..

        • If you go back to my very first Cousins contract column, the numbers were so much more reasonable than they are now.

          • Every year the cap increases, so in a few years, every contract becomes more “reasonable”

    • walter_in_fallschurch

          • Josh RosenSquinns

I win either way. If KC doesn’t go, then clearly I was correct. If I am wrong, then KC will suffer for quite some time in Cleveland.

        • I agree. But if he did, it’d be a short drive for me to take my kids to see him play. They love him. And whatever we think of him as a player/contract situation, he’s as good a role model as there is in professional sports. I don’t think too many would disagree with that.

        • Cleveland would have to blow him away with a plan, they might have some draft picks, but If’n I’m Kirk, I need to see them bring in a vet leader or two as well, but that would be hard for Cleveland to do BEFORE signing Kirk.

        • walter_in_fallschurch

          squinns,
i agree. he is in a position to pick any team he wants. why would he pick cleveland (or washington)? i imagine that with 44mil in the bank already, he would play for less in a good situation.

    • I think Cousins is going to go to the team that offers the most money, no matter what team it is. People can talk themselves into all sorts of thing for the right price.

      • It’s a higher calling…. something beyond the scope of average human understanding. Those who know, know.

      • He is going to go to the highest offer from a team that he thinks he can win with.

That will prob be only a few teams. Jax prob wouldn’t have even been a consideration, but some of this is about the offensive fit. If Garappolo leaves San Fran in free agency, that would then get us back to where we were at the beginning of the season.

        • Speculation….you have no way of knowing that.

        • I don’t think the “that he thinks he can win with” will have anything to do with it. He’ll say something positive about his chances of winning about the team that offers him the best contract.

          • I won’t disagree, Steve. But if he does take the most money to go to Cleveland, he will end up being known as the guy who got a record deal that was totally not worth it.

Also, he’ll be seen as a huge hypocrite, since he has said all along that it is about situation and not money.

          • “I’m very excited to be in Cleveland. There is a new energy here. We have alot of great pieces in place on both sides of the ball, a great coaching staff, and a new front office that is doing wonderful things. I’m going to do my best to help turn this franchise around and make the city of Cleveland proud. I think we can do it and I can’t wait to get started.”

    • – The most versatile offensive lineman, or prospect for that matter, in Mobile is Nevada’s Austin Corbett. Through three practices for the South team, he has taken snaps at all five positions on the offensive line. He does not just have position flexibility, but he was actually really good at tackle, guard, and center throughout the week.

The third and final practice was his exclamation point on a great week. Not only did he bury defensive tackle Poona Ford in the ground on two consecutive reps at center, but he then moved outside to right tackle to throw Marcus Davenport on the ground. With how talented he is and the fact that he could possibly play any spot on the offensive line, the hype train should get hot quick with Corbett.

  • Scott Wright reports from Sr Bowl
Tanner Lee looks like 3rd best QB there, has all the tools, rough around the edges, would be a good developmental QB pickup as most development QBs have some major flaw, but he doesn’t, still needs polish
Allan Lazard is a beast for a WR
Jordan Akins has been a very impressive TE
Harrison Phillips has played well, prob a top 75 selection
J Penny has been the standout RB, would be a nice 2nd-3rd round selection
James Washington may not go very early in the draft but he’s played himself maybe into top 50
Baker Mayfield doesn’t have best mechanics but prob goes top 15 (best QB at the Sr Bowl, Allen second), when asked about spec about Denver, he thought that they do like Mayfield, but they (Denver) will likely go after FA vet first, (mark up another person who thinks Kirk Cousins will be in Denver) and he specifically called out Cousins
Wright thinks Sam Darnold is the #1 QB in this class (though not at Sr bowl)

He appeared on the Bottom Line show, the host Mike’l Severe (it’s an Omaha show, but he’s from Louisiana) a guy that does not think this draft class is all that special for QBs, especially disagreed with Wright re: Sam Darnold. Doesn’t do well off first read, inaccurate a lot…

    • So Lee is the 3rd best QB in the Senior Bowl, how many QB’s do they usually have there 6 or 8?

      • 4 for each

Keep in mind that Wright said he had Lee as a priority UDFA and has rocketed him up his “board” to a late round draft pick. Really good developmental option.

Most of the best players are not at the Sr Bowl

    • Not to pee in your cornflakes, but Benjamin Solak thinks Lee is the 8th best QB at the Senior Bowl:

      8) Tanner Lee, Nebraska
Let me tell you something right now: there were easily four better QBs at the East/West Shrine Game who I would have loved to see in place of Lee. Lee supposedly has a good arm (it didn’t stand out against the Mayfields/Whites/Benkerts of the world), and honestly, I don’t know what else attracts people to him. His tape and his practices were both high-variance, inaccurate, frantic, and interception heavy.

I wish him all the best, but he was an easy slot at 8th for me.

      • So who’s a better judge of talent, Solak or Wright? Home field advantage goes to Wright……cause his name, right?

      • it is as I’ve been saying

Tanner Lee is going to be drafted by someone looking for their Next but still has their Now for a year or two. To go home to New Orleans would be a pretty good option for him. His upside is that he ain’t skered of throwing into tight windows.

But to be fair, Tanner is no Tristan Gebbia.

    • Don’t you be talkin’ bad about my boy Baker, now! Ole’ Tanner Lee couldn’t hold his jockstrap. – D_CQGC

  • It’s Friday you know what that means. Time to post your favorite movie quotes and youtube nonsense.

A GUY GOES INTO A BAR IN NEW YORK WHERE ALL THE BARTENDERS ARE ROBOTS:

THE GUY SITS DOWN AT THE BAR AND THE ROBOT ASKS: “WHAT WILL YOU HAVE?

THE GUY REPLIES, “WHISKEY.” THE ROBOT BRINGS BACK HIS DRINK AND ASKS,

    “WHAT’S YOUR IQ?”

    THE GUY SAY, “128”

The robot talks about physics, space exploration, and medical technology.

AFTER THE GUY LEAVES, HE PAUSES AT THE STREET CORNER AND THINKS ABOUT WHAT

    HE JUST ENCOUNTERED,

AND THE MORE HE THINKS ABOUT IT THE MORE CURIOUS HE GETS, SO HE DECIDES TO

    GO BACK.

THE ROBOT ASKS, “WHAT’S YOUR DRINK?”

    THE GUY ANSWERS, “WHISKEY.”

THE ROBOT RETURNS WITH HIS DRINK AND ASKS, “WHAT’S YOUR IQ?”

THIS TIME THE MAN REPLIES, “100.”

THE ROBOT TALKS ABOUT NASCAR, BUDWEISER,  FOOTBALL, AND ALL-STAR WRESTLING.

THE MAN FINISHES HIS DRINK, LEAVES, BUT IS SO INTERESTED IN THIS

“EXPERIMENT” THAT HE DECIDES HE’LL TRY AGAIN.

HE ENTERS THE BAR AND, AS USUAL, THE ROBOT ASKS HIM WHAT HE WANTS TO DRINK.

    THE MAN REPLIES, “WHISKEY.”

THE ROBOT BRINGS THE DRINK AND ASKS, “WHAT’S YOUR IQ?”

THIS TIME THE MAN ANSWERS, “50.”

THE ROBOT LEANS IN REAL CLOSE AND SLOWLY ASKS,

“SO, ARE YOU PEOPLE STILL UNHAPPY THAT HILLARY LOST?”

    • Why bother to take a RB in the 5th? We have a shit ton of mediocre running backs to paw through… why add another one? If you are going to go RB in the draft go high and get a good one.

  • I know you all are DYING to know my thoughts on this offseason… so, here it is.

Let Kirk walk for anything over $26 mil… draft a new QB and dline and O line. Spend some FA dollars on a top line RB, OG and WR. Hope to hell everyone is properly healed and run their asses to death this offseason so they aren’t a frigging MASH unit.

  • Sports fans who have long criticized their favorite teams for the prices they charge at the stadium might finally get their wish of cheaper concessions.

That’s what could happen if others follow the lead of Atlanta Falcons and United owner Arthur Blank, whose group revealed Thursday that, despite lowering their food and beverage prices to the lowest in all of major professional American sports, fans actually spent more.Steve Cannon, CEO of the AMB Group, Blank’s holding company, told ESPN that although food and beverage prices were 50 percent lower in its new Mercedes-Benz Stadium than the prices in the Georgia Dome the previous year, fans spent 16 percent more.

    • Senior Bowl draft. 😉

      • Tbf, I’ve been pushing Harrison Phillips and Shultz since November and the Mexican Mauler “sort of” for the same.
My senior bowl picks on there are Penny, Hill, and Cappa.

Stroman is on more than a few of my mocks.

Andrew Wingard is a new discovery. I picked him a round early.

      • You’ll love Wingard, he’s like a Compton FS……..see how I look out for you?
I think Compton will be gone.

  • Interesting stats. I think Mayfield is trying to prove he can throw it hard in some cases.

  • Wife turned to see who was tapping at the glass. It was nobody… it was hail, on a 60 degree day just south of Oakland. Within ten seconds, the whole block was standing out on their front porches, laughing and cheering.

Then it stopped, and we all went back inside and nobody knows each other again. Great moment.

  • Morris was the master of the 6-8 yard run
    that’s OK
but he never had break away speed
I think Perine is faster than Morris
but the o-line was shit this year on run blocking for the most part

  • Jay has shown no ability to use a workhorse RB.

  • Our run game is right where jays run game has always been. Lets hope he has finally learned something.
