The Washington Redskins announced today that they signed OL Orlando Franklin to a Reserve/Future contract.
Franklin stands 6’6” and weighs 315 pounds. He played his college ball at the University of Miami (FL) and was drafted in the second round of the 2011 draft by the Denver Broncos. He spent a brief period with the Redskins during the 2017 season.

Mrs. Austin asked me to go to a Girl Scout Cookies and Beer Pairing event at a local brewery. It was part fund raiser, part PR. They expected 200 attendees, and had to cut off people after 350.
It was pretty damn fun, some of the pairings were pretty damn good. Other, not so much. But I don’t like skunky IPAs.
While waiting for my next pairing, I asked strangers how they found out about the event. Everyone said, “A friend texted me, sounded like fun.” Good day.
Without ever trying cookies and beer, I have to think that the only beer that would do a cookie justice, and give the proper mouth feel of a dunked cookie, would be a good stout.
Hoppy ass IPA and cookies? Bleh.

Why the beech

Beech has a very broad root system and dense, waxy leaves that capture all of the light. Any trees around them, usually oaks, will be choked off and die. Beech has almost the same compression and shear rating as oak (good). Beech burns clean, with alittle less BTUs. The reason timber companies don’t target it as much is because it kiln dries very poorly. It’ll go wild (warping and cupping). They like the big money that Poplar and Oak brings. That and White pine. Some Beech 🙂 is good. They’re good on slopes and in little groves but they’ll out pace everything else (around here anyway) that’s really the only live tree I will take. Plenty of Oaks and Pine dying on their own or by storm for me to be cutting perfectly good ones that support my ecosystem. A Beech nut is crack cocaine to a wild Turkey. They have bark that’s more like a skin. They don’t split that well.
Most of your trim in lumber stores is Poplar.

Hoyt, PSE, Martin, Parker, Bowtec, ect.
You need to start with a bow that’s easy to shoot, comfortable, has at least an 80% let-off. Faster isn’t always better.
Same applies to crossbows.
I shoot a bow that was manufactured in 2003, a Hoyt magnatec. I love it and haven’t felt the need to upgrade. If you’re a guy that likes the next thing, the compound bow market is gonna love you.
I also shoot a Parker crossbow. It was born in 2005. Axle to axle is short so it’s not too wide, balances good.
Biggest difference for me is the crossbow bolt is 22″ with a broadhead and I shoot a 31″ regular carbon arrow. The longer the arrow the more stability in flight. (Yaw)
I’m NOT a next best thing guy… but I WILL buy something until I hit on one that I like. I’m that way with fishing equipment, and was with guns before I was banned from owning them.
You’ll be able to try them out. Get the feel of it.
As far as the hunting goes. Everything is up close and personal. No big gun blast or crushing impact from the energy generated by a bullet. Usually no second chance. Always remember you’re cutting them instead of smashing them. Learn the anatomy of a deer. You want lung- heart- lung, that ends it. You gut shoot a deer and they suffer, you have to back out and come back way later with a slim chance of recovery. Be patient. Pick your shot.
I used to hunt with an old .300 Savage. You had to hit them where it counts or you would never see that fucker again
I had a Matthews . I should have kept it , and eased back into it slowly . They make Kevlar gloves , but I had a mental block after my hand situation . It was fucked up pretty bad.
Ask around when you get there and find a good bow shop, an honest owner with a tech that knows what the fuck he’s doing. Read read read. Practice practice practice.

You know , if you were to watch a carbon arrow shot from a compound bow in slow motion , it actually bows upon release and then it flattens back out . It happens super fast obviously , but it does bow in the middle of the arrow. Well the one that impaled my hand , never flattened back out . It broke right at that point . Front half of arrow kept going . back half went in my hand that I was holding the bow with , That’s how that happened .
That arrow had been compromised somehow . It had a weak spot somehow .

It wasn’t . Just take extreme caution with your arrows . Check them good each time. If you hit something solid other than your target when practicing , I recommend throwing it away . hard ground , tree , whatever . I would not reuse it , but that’s me. I never bow hunted since . Swapped it with a dude for a xbow , that I never use anymore either .
It is relaxing though . get out in your backyard and target practice with your bow . It’s fun .

It’s really brushy down there. Learn to shoot, you don’t want to hit a deer bad and lose them. Learn to shoot at a downward angle. Practice from your roof or a high deck.
Scent control, know where your wind is coming from and set up accordingly. I like to get as high up as I can, 18-20′ up. A smart old doe will still see you every now and then but not much. You can get a good draw without being rushed. Practice practice practice. Wear a harness in the tree. Ground blinds kick ass if you can leave it set up. Try to always double lung them. Don’t practice with field points. Don’t hunt with the arrows you practice with. Slip in, slip out. Learn to see sign and understand what it’s telling you. Have fun.

The Redskins grab a quarterback competitor.
Falk completed 67 percent of his passes in 2017 for 3,593 yards with 30 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Some team sources are intrigued with Falk (6-4, 205) because they like his pocket-passing potential and accuracy. In speaking with scouts, they say that Falk has an above-average arm, but his accuracy is his best strength. Falk has some issues seeing coverage and will throw into it. Falk is also considered a thin-framed player who will need to add weight for the NFL. He lacks escapability and mobility, but sources compared Falk to Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins.
Falk completed 70 percent of his passes in 2016 for 4,468 yards with 38 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. In 2015, Falk completed 69 percent of his passes for 4,561 yards with 38 touchdowns and eight interceptions. As a freshman, he completed 64 percent of his throws for 1,859 yards with 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
I think this is a guy Jay could work with.

13. Washington Redskins: Da’Ron Payne, DT, Alabama
The Redskins’ top needs are a quarterback – unless Kirk Cousins is willing to sign an extension, which is unlikely -, defensive front-seven talent, and a safety. Of those needs, adding a quarterback is the most critical issue to address, but all of the quarterbacks are gone. Thus, Washington grabs an upgrade to the defensive line. Reuniting Payne and Jonathan Allen could be tremendous for the Redskins’ defense.
Payne dominated at the point of attack in 2017, stuffing runs while showcasing his freakish speed and athleticism. On the year, he totaled 53 tackles, two half-sacks, three passes batted, an interception and a touchdown reception. I heard general managers and scouts raving about Payne all season.
Scouts were already raving about Payne’s potential in the preseason. He was the Crimson Tide’s best defensive lineman in 2017, following Jonathan Allen’s moving on to the NFL. Payne (6-2, 319) is a run plugger with a lot of potential to grow. When given the opportunity to rush the passer in 2016 and 2017, Payne was impressive, and sources have said that he helped set up sacks for Jonathan Allen, Tim Williams, Ryan Anderson, and Rashaan Evans the past two seasons.

44. Washington Redskins: Dorance Armstrong Jr., DE, Kansas
Washington could use more edge-rushing and defensive front-seven talent.
In 2017, Armstrong totaled 63 tackles with 9.5 for a loss, two sacks, four forced fumbles and four passes batted. An NFC general manager told me that Armstrong continued to impress them in 2017 even though his production was down. He was a big presence for Kansas in 2016 as he totaled 10 sacks with 20 tackles for a loss, 56 tackles and three forced fumbles.
The 6-foot-4, 241-pounder could use more weight for the NFL to be an edge rusher against pro offensive tackles. That would help him to get off blocks. Armstrong is extremely quick and athletic, but could use more strength. He would be a great fit as a 3-4 outside linebacker as well.

An example would be with Harrison Phillips. About two months ago I was talking to Greg about him. Greg really likes the big Guard from Texas El Paso Will Hernandez. I’ve seen some of his film so knew of him, brought up Harrison Phillips and Greg went and watched a tape of Stanford vs. Notre Dame. Notre Dame has a fucking insane Offensive Line so this gives him a perspective of Phillips vs. real competition.
Not criticizing by any means,but sometimes a player has it or he doesn’t,when it comes to playing in the NFL as opposed to college. One reason I don’t project.
