Training Camp Day 1: Wrap Up and Samaje Perine and Jonathan Allen Interviews

July 27, 2017

This may come as no surprise to some, but the most intriguing battle of the day was in the trenches. If you ask me, the defensive front 7 won the day during 11 on 11. Of course, there were no pads on today, just a helmet, but pressure was a theme during the team scrimmages.

There was a heavy rotation throughout the day along the defensive line, and it was therefore a little hard to see who the coaches were leaning towards in the first string roles. Remember, though, just because a player starts right now doesn’t necessarily mean they will be starting come week 1. Second year player Joey Mbu saw a good amount of time with the 1st team defense. He flashed to some extent in both team scrimmages and 1 on 1 against interior offensive line.

Rookie Jonathan Allen flashed in 1 on 1 drills and was able push the guard into the backfield on a couple reps. He and Ryan Anderson still have a ways to go, but this practice was not bad for either of the rookies.

Overall the defensive front 7 was the most impressive unit for me on day 1, although the secondary played well too, snagging two interceptions by Kirk Cousins and Nate Sudfeld, respectively.

I’ve recorded my thoughts in more detail in the short bumper podcast below, along with my exclusive interviews with Samaje Perine and Jonathan Allen, here:
